WY Update: Elk Feedgrounds

Since October 2021, Jackson-area chapter leadership team member Liz Lynch has been participating in the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGFD) process for receiving public input regarding the future of elk feedgrounds in western Wyoming. Liz has represented Wyoming BHA in the non-governmental organization (NGO) stakeholder group.  The “shared learning” phase, which involved weekly presentations and Q&A sessions, ran from early November 2021 to the end of January 2022. You can revisit the ...

How to Make Tallow

Author: Megan Mclean
Tallow is rendered animal fat and it is great for baking, soap making, frying and can be used in any number of beauty products such as beard oil, hair conditioner, lotion, or lip balm. It is really a gold mine if you know how to use it, and it makes use of a part of the animal that may otherwise get discarded during processing. I like the idea of giving use to as much of the animal as I can, and it reminds me that the product will have an echo of the place it was harvested. To start, you ...

FWP outlines proposed new policy for free landowner elk tags

Author: Montana BHA
New guidelines and timelines for Montana landowners to apply for a free either-sex elk hunting tag will go before the Fish and Wildlife Commission for approval on April 19. Prior to that, the commission is holding a work session to discuss the program on April 18 at 3 p.m. The change in the agreements, known commonly as 454s because they were created by House Bill 454, was motivated by a controversial approach the Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks took last year. For decades, only a ...

Montana BHA Responds to '454' Program Changes

We have long encouraged FWP to improve the 454 agreements, including most recently at March’s EQC meeting and in an oped published by one of our board members, Jake Schwaller. Some of our suggestions included a cap on these agreements (which are currently unlimited) and to move up the application process to time these with the existing landowner permit allocations and draws. Yesterday, FWP sent a press release announcing that our concerns are being heard; they are planning to take two big ...

Senate Bill Would Greenlight Sale of Public Lands Out of Public Hands

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), joined by his colleagues Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and John Barrasso (R-WY), announced in early April the introduction of the HOUSES Act (S. 4062), legislation that would permit state or local governments to buy public lands on the cheap, ostensibly to address diminished housing supply and rising housing costs.  Sen. Lee and the bill’s other sponsors claim that S. 4062 would alleviate the housing crisis. However, it is similar to legislation that Sen. Lee floated back in ...

4/11/22 NMDGF Game Commission Recap

Author: Joel Gay
New Mexico elk hunters could see big changes including unlimited OTC private land hunts in GMU 34 and a prohibition on muzzleloader sights, while turkey hunters could get a longer season plus a chance to draw Gould’s turkey tags as the State Game Commission considers big game proposals outlined at their meeting in Santa Fe on Monday. But the biggest surprise of the day was a last-minute effort to revise the Bighorn Rule and potentially give resident New Mexico hunters better access to ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 129: Joseph Jenkins, biologist, herpetologist, Alabama wanderer

Author: Thomas Plank
The Bankhead National Forest in Alabama is a place of shadowed canyons and rushing coldwater creeks, crystalline waterfalls and bluff shelters blackened by the smoke from campfires over thousands of years. It’s an island of rare plants and wildlife and old growth trees in a state where coalmining and industrial forestry and now the sprawl of cities have radically altered the landscape. Come with us to Moulton, Alabama, and meet native son Joseph Jenkins, a biologist and herpetologist, hunter ...

BHA's Stance on New E-Bike Guidance From the Forest Service

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has consistently been a leading voice within the hunting, angling and conservation community for managing motorized vehicle use on our public lands responsibly and with wildlife in mind. As motorized bicycles, commonly known as “e-bikes,” have grown in popularity, BHA has actively engaged with land managers, decision makers and conservation partners who will help shape how future e-bike use on public lands is planned and managed.      A recent decision by the ...
