Hunting Mountain Merriam’s (& Gettin’ Schooled)

Author: David Lien
More often than not encounters with mountain Merriam’s end with hunters getting schooled by wary toms or watching them from afar. After getting busted by a tom not long after sunup, we encountered a sizable group of hens and strutting toms without being able to close the distance. Watching this struttin’ and gobblin’ spectacle alone was worth the price of admission, but I’m getting ahead of myself. The previous afternoon Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) Habitat Watch Volunteer ...

Author: Montana BHA
In 1881, a 19-year-old Louis Shodair stepped off a stagecoach in Helena, a small mining community only two years older than him. Stevens Point Students Collaborate on Wetland Restoration Efforts

Authored by Jeffrey Edwards and edited by Brendan Woodall (U.S. FWS) The steam of freshly brewed coffee slowly rising from the BHA Stanley mug mimicked that of a freshly stoked campfire in the backcountry as we sat awaiting the arrival of our crew in the crisp Wisconsin air. Stoke the fire. A statement I’ve heard Mr. Land Tawney repeat countless times, but it still has a way of seeping deep into my soul and reverberates with every inch of my being. Every time I apply for a grant through S. ...
