EVENT RECAP: Bighorn River Fence Pull

Author: Montana BHA
While a Montana spring weather warning forced us to delay this event, 25 hearty public land owners from BHA, Bighorn River Alliance and staff from both the National Park Service and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks weren't going to let a little rain on the forecast get them down again! On May 6, to belatedly celebrate Earth Day, a bunch of folks showed up at Three Mile Access near St. Xavier, ready to make the fishing and hunting the Bighorn River a little safer! Crews split up and ...

From Rags to Tags

Author: Alex Gorman
When I moved to Minnesota in 2020 to start my graduate program in Natural Resources Science and Management at the University of Minnesota, I had high hopes, despite lockdowns and virtual learning, of making connections with people who could mentor me through the process of becoming a hunter and angler. I had the passion and determination; all I needed was a mentor, or as it turns out, a whole group of mentors who could channel that energy. What I found in Minnesota still feels like a ...

Striped Bass Amendment 7: ASMFC Spring Meeting Recap

This is one of those times where we can look back and realize in very specific terms that we CAN make a difference for the resources we care so much about when we engage in the processes that manage them. In a recent conversation on Episode 48 of the American Saltwater Guides Association’s “Guide Post” podcast New England Chapter Board Chair Mike Woods mentioned that if the outcome of ASMFC’s Spring Meeting, and specifically the outcome of the final action on Amendment 7, ended up being ...

OPINION: Timing of FWP's pen-raised pheasants plan is bad

On April 18, FWP announced that a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in wild birds and at domestic poultry farms in Montana. In its cautionary release, FWP explained that "HPAI viruses are extremely infectious and fatal to poultry and some species of wild birds." As we have all learned over the last several years, the potential spread of viruses is serious business. With this new virus emerging in and amongst our bird populations this situation begs an important ...

Susitna Basin Recreational Rivers Keep Their Designations

Author: Alaska BHA
On Monday the Alaska House Resource committee moved forward with a version of House Bill 120 that maintains recreational rivers designations in the Susitna Basin, thanks in part to a significant amount of feedback from constituents. Alaska BHA members sent letters to members of the House Resource Committee requesting that the language repealing the recreational rivers designations be pulled from the bill. Thank you for your actions!        These designations and the associated management ...

Hunting Educated Mountain Merriam’s And Elk Herd/Hunting Trends (& Cinco de Mayo)

Author: David Lien
I generally hunt turkeys the first week of Colorado’s spring season (mid-April) and then return two weeks later (the first week of May) to “hunt” with a camera. As a bonus, because the habitat of mountain Merriam’s turkeys and Rocky Mountain elk overlap in much of western Colorado, it’s not uncommon to encounter both species in close proximity this time of year. Although elk hunting is notoriously difficult with success rates hovering between 15 to 20 percent in Colorado, over the counter ...

EVENT RECAP: Logan Shooting Area Clean Up

The rain was coming down steadily during the drive from Belgrade to Logan on the morning of May 1, 2022. Not a downpour, but enough that it could make for a long day and possibly deter folks less hearty than those who joined the Montana Chapter of BHA in our Logan Area cleanup. Our efforts focused on DNRC state trust land, just west of the Logan Landfill, primarily a mile long section along Buffalo Jump Road and a single site along 2 Dog Road, heading towards the landfill. With the ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Bonus Ep. 131, Sen. Jon Tester and the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act

Author: Thomas Plank
To those outside of Montana, the Blackfoot River is the “Big Blackfoot” featured in Norman Maclean’s lyrical and tragic novel A River Runs Through It. For Montanans and generations of visitors, the Blackfoot is a state of being all its own, a big rowdy river of native cutthroats and bull trout, its waters born of both high-altitude wilderness snows and the tannin-stained, unfathomably rich chain of wetlands and lakes of the Clearwater drainage. It is a huge, complex and vibrant watershed, ...
