Whitefish Melt

Author: Micah Fields
Whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni) often get a bad rap among Western anglers, but the native salmonid deserves our respect as both worthy quarry and delicious table fare. Related species dominate deli cases in Manhattan and potlucks throughout the Midwest, and the Mountain Whitefish—with its wide distribution throughout the Pacific Northwest—should be no exception. Their mild, firm flesh is ideal for smoking and incorporation in salads and spreads, and this recipe highlights the simplicity of ...

A Community: WA AFI’s Annual Archery Event Fortifies Relationships

As someone who learned to hunt in the absence of communal experience and mentorship, I understand the trials of error, self-doubt, and sometimes overconfidence that can plague an inexperienced hunter. Having spent hundreds of hours peering into my phone’s screen, devouring YouTube videos with a side of hunter-forum banter, I felt ready for my first hunt. Determined, I spent that weekend hunting the closest and biggest swath of public land without an ounce of success. I figured – I was ...

Author: David Lien
The Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) chapter held their 15th Annual Rendezvous in the San Isabel National Forest west of Salida/Poncha Springs during June. A dozen hunters and anglers from around the state set up camp in a high-mountain meadow (known locally as the “goat wadi”) at 9,000-plus feet in the Sawatch Range. BHA has always been a “quality over quantity” outfit and this Rendezvous served to prove the point. Attendees included (in part): a former Colorado Parks and ...

Spring Creek Rim Fence Removal

Author: Briant Wiles
Draining the east slope of the Umcompahgre Plateau, Spring creek cuts an impressive gorge on its descent to the broad farming valley around Montrose Colorado. Livestock grazing has a long history on Forest Service (FS) lands along Spring Creek. With the grazing comes the fences and inevitable conflict with wildlife. So, on June 15th BHA habitat stewardship staff and volunteer leaders joined FS field staff to remove a section of fence on Spring Creek Rim.   The forest around Dave Wood Road ...

Vermont Successfully Defends Wildlife Management and Conservation Legacy

Vermont S.258 emerged as one of the most contentious wildlife and hunting-related bills in the state's recent history.
