AFI Event Review (Alaska Caribou 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Learn to hunt Caribou event Alaska, 2023.   When you get stationed in Alaska, it's easy to think that your world of leaving the base is over. What you imagine is this snowy hellscape because that's all you hear about from guys who have been stationed in Alaska. I grew up hunting in the Southeast and never thought twice about trying to hunt while I was stationed in Alaska. I cannot think David made enough for inviting me on this learn to hunt Caribou dual skills camp hosted by BHA. Growing ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 185: Aldo Leopold and America's 1st Wilderness

The Wilderness Act was passed by Congress in 1964, and has protected over 109 million acres of American public lands (53% of them in Alaska) since then. But the idea was born in 1924, with the vision of none other than Aldo Leopold, who was then the Supervisor of the Carson National Forest, and had spent almost fifteen years working on and exploring the wild public lands of New Mexico. Leopold argued that among the resources the Forest Service was mandated to safeguard for the American ...

Fenced Out! - 4 months of Colorado fence projects.

Author: Briant Wiles
Under a hot July sun, the wire shined, and our core body temperatures rose. We dug, pulled, cut, and wrestled the fence. The mixed woven and barbed wire barrier was deeply entrenched in a mountain shrub community north of Hayden Colorado. It was draped across the hillside tired and rusted. Put there years ago, it no longer serves its purpose of managing grazing. No longer would there be an obstacle ready to cut, ensnare, trap, separate, deprive, or redirect the wildlife that live here. ...

Thompson Divide Mineral Withdrawal: A Win for All

Author: David Lien
Backcountry Journal: Summer 2024 Backcountry hunters and anglers value wild country, clean water and intact habitat. It’s a founding principal of this organization, and one that remains a priority today. But we aren’t the only ones who know their value. Five years ago I teamed up with rancher Bill Fales to advocate for protecting Colorado’s Thompson Divide from proposed oil and gas development. Bill and his family ranch alongside the Crystal River, south of Carbondale. The ranch has been in ...

BHA Stewardship Report: The Oregon Fence Project

Blazing sun, thick brush, and rugged country. All of these come to mind when thinking of Oregon’s high desert. BHA’s Oregon stewardship project encounters these characteristics daily, as we work towards the replacement of over 20 miles of antiquated cattle fence on public lands. Our area of operation is a 40-mile-long boundary fence the spans the border between the Deschutes National Forest and BLM land, starting at Bend, OR and working its way southeast through the desert. This land is some ...

Foraging, (Forest) Health, and Fishing

A different kind of FHF adventure Words and Photos by Melissa Hendrickson One of the lessons I’ve learned over the many years of doing field work and hunting is having several backup plans can make or break a day out in the woods. Carrying this preparation mindset into organizing BHA events helped me successfully host a recent gathering when Mother Nature was trying to cancel: a 90% chance of mountain thunderstorms. This led to a last minute change for a foraging and forest health hike from ...
