Update from Chapter Chair Hey all, I hope everyone is managing to stay cool! This month, I want to encourage you all to take the time this summer to meet your fellow BHA members.  We have two big gatherings happening here in our neck of the woods this August. The first is the annual Muster in the Mountains.  This is happening in north central PA and will have BHA members and staff from all over joining to hang out for a day of storytelling, cooking and just hanging out. The second event is ...

AFI Event Review (Arkansas Snow Goose 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
AFI Event Review AR Snow Goose Feb 2023 Thank you so much for inviting me on the recent learn to snow goose hunt event. I've never been much of a hunter, but I've always been curious, and to be honest I was not thrilled with being selected for the snow goose hunt out of the four or five events, I have a plied for. I've seen the piles of 100 Snowgoose dead on social media and thought it didn't seem like a fair chase or in line with the conservation ethic I hold myself to. However, after ...

Waterfowl Banding with Rhode Island BHA – Summer 2024

Each year fish & wildlife agencies around the country assemble teams of biologists, technicians, and volunteers to take on the important conservation work of banding waterfowl. Unlike winter waterfowl banding, where efforts focus primarily on migratory ducks on their winter range, summer banding is focused on Canada geese in the areas where they raise young and go through the annual cycle of molting. In 2024, New England BHA’s RI team assisted wildlife biologists from the RI Department of ...

Indiana BHA Chapter Assists Willow Slough WMA

Author: Indiana BHA
On Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th, the Indiana chapter put in some serious work at the Willow Slough FWA, a 10,000 acre property near Morocco, Indiana. This property borders Illinois, so it was fitting that we had two members from the Illinois chapter join us. The property manager, Mike Schoof, is in the process of changing the boundaries of the waterfowl resting area in order to create better conditions for migratory birds. We helped out by removing signs from areas of the ...

What Project 2025 Means for Public Lands and Waters

Stories about “Project 2025” have been circulating in the news, but what many hunters and anglers may not realize are the vast implications it would have for the conservation of our nation’s public lands and waters. This presidential transition document – organized by the Heritage Foundation – establishes policy recommendations for a conservative president in 2025. Authored by William Perry Pendley, the former Acting Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a host of these ...

U.S. Forest Service Clarifies Dog Leash Rule for BWCA

If you are a Boundary Waters visitor, and enjoy having your four-legged friends along on your hunting, camping, or fishing trip, you might have noticed a change to one of the rules listed on the back of your BWCA Permit. BWCAW FAQ #16 of the Regulations reads "Dogs must be under human control at all times on a 6-foot or shorter leash." Previously, this rule read "Dogs must be on a 6-foot or shorter leash or under control at all times." The new language was intended to clarify the existing ...

Author: David Lien
The Colorado chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) recently appointed Jarret Childers to serve as an Assistant Regional Director for the Southwest Colorado region. Jarret was born in northern Arizona but spent most of his youth in the southern part of the state exploring the unique landscape and often hunting and fishing for whatever was nearby with his family. Growing up Jarret was the “bird dog” on many dove and quail hunts, even when an actual dog was present! He tagged along ...

Florida's Right to Fish & Hunt Bill

This November, Floridians heading to the ballot box will have the opportunity to vote on Amendment 2, Florida’s Right to Fish and Hunt bill. This bill would protect Florida’s rich outdoor heritage from efforts to limit or outright ban fishing and hunting in the state of Florida. There are currently a total of 23 states that constitutionally protect hunting and fishing including all of Florida’s neighboring states. Introduced last year by Representative Lauren Melo, Florida’s Right to Fish ...
