Montana - squeal on pigs!

Author: Montana BHA
Feral swine (sometimes called wild pigs, wild boars, etc) spell trouble for Montana's wildlife and habitat. They're incredibly destructive, invasive and hard to control. In the 39 states they're established in, they cause some $2.5 BILLION in damages each year. They're also dangerous vectors of more than thirty diseases that pose threats to humans, livestock and wildlife. It's important that we do our part as hunters and conservationists to keep them out of our state. While they're not here ...

A Farewell to Fish

In the summer of that year, we lived in a village near a stream in Idaho where salmon came to spawn. The Valley of the Fish was broad and flat, and high snow-covered mountains rose to the south. The stream wound like a snake through the valley marshes, and the water sparkled in the sun. There were boulders and pebbles in it, and in places, the water moved swiftly, and for these reasons, the fish liked it, and their families had lived there for a long time. There were many salmon in the ...

Colorado Over The Counter (OTC) Unit Elk Hunting

Author: David Lien
It was opening morning of Colorado’s 2nd rifle elk season (Oct. 29 – Nov. 6, 2022) and I was hunting in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. During September I had the opportunity to do some scouting in the area (on Sept. 19) with my friend, local hunter-conservationist and Colorado BHA Habitat Watch Volunteer Rick Hooley. We subsequently heard one bugling bull and I saw another, posing for photos roadside, the prior evening (see “Elk Hunt Scouting” photos link below). Colorado BHA ...

Gems Among the Aufeis

Author: Kevin Fraley

BY KEVIN FRALEY Snowdrifts piled up and buried my cabin in interior Alaska in the winter of 2019. Outside, temperatures hovered as low as minus 40 degrees. When the cold, dark months trapped me inside, I used the time to dream about Alaska’s short summer and fall seasons. Inside, I pored over online maps, planning an early fall trip. I’d stumbled onto a scientific report from the 1970s that described fish presence in rivers of Alaska’s Arctic Slope, the area of mountains, tundra and ...

How Public Lands Re-centered and Saved Me

Words By Hunter Owen During the COVID-19 outbreak I was in Iraq working with a special operations unit. We had endured freezing temperatures while sleeping in a bunker as Iran launched ballistic missiles at us, lots of sleepless nights before and after the attack. Suddenly I was dealing with some virus that was changing the world, eating undercooked goat for the 10,000th time, and trying to wrap my head around why my wife is telling that toilet paper is hard to get and the kids can’t go to ...
