Making the Switch: A Quick Guide to Going Non-Lead

Author: Mike McTee

By Mike McTee and Corey Ellis   Hunters have touted the lethality of non-lead bullets for decades. Take this quote from the NRA’s American Hunter Magazine: Every now and then a new bullet comes along that redefines what we think we know about hunting projectiles. The Barnes all-copper X-Bullet was one of those, and it has become the most imitated big-game bullet on the market. It was introduced in 1989, and ever since the Barnes X has been a favorite of serious big game hunters wherever ...

WA Chapter Provides Testimony on Why Hunting is Conservation

Author: Chris Hager
Public Testimony given on 10/28/22 at the WDFW Commission Meeting: Good morning, Commissioners, my name is Dan Wilson and I’m the co-chair of the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. During the wildlife committee meeting on Oct 13, I was disappointed when a commissioner cast doubt on the idea that hunting plays a primary role in conservation and I feel the recurring obligation to clarify the interdependency of hunting and conservation before this body. OPINION: It's up to us to defend our hunting traditions

Hunting season is here. Many hunters— including me — will head out this weekend in search of good times and a chance at harvesting Montana’s publicly owned game. While afield I’m often reminded of how lucky I am to hunt and to participate in the North American Model of Wildlife Management. This fuels my desire to preserve our traditions and opportunities and push back against efforts to privatize and commercialize our wildlife. Time afield also provides an opportunity for introspection. ...

University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Hosts Fly Tying Night

The beauty of the outdoors is so alluring that it drives us to attempt to blend in with our scenic surroundings. We accomplish this through clothing that blends in with the environment, calls that produce sounds like the game we pursue, and even mimicking life itself through decoys and lures. Those in this community strive to mirror and better understand what surrounds us in the outdoors. Take a moment now and imagine yourself standing in a flowing stream. In your hand you hold a fly rod, ...
