Colorado Over-The-Counter (OTC) Unit Elk Hunting: Problems & Possibilities

Author: David Lien
Although I revere all big game (and other) species, only Rocky Mountain elk can coax me out in the late fall freezing rain or swirling snow to hike and climb for miles in long-odds, over-the-counter (OTC) units where the chances of encountering other hunters generally eclipses those of seeing elk.[1] Colorado’s OTC units are perhaps the most difficult elk hunts in the country, but the challenge only strengthens my resolve. “Elk hunting is hard. Period. It doesn’t matter if you come West ...

2022 West Virginia Chapter Highlights

2022 was a good year for the West Virginia BHA Chapter. Policy and legislative issues were the primary focus rolling into the year and the chapter did an excellent job keeping members privy to possible bills that could impact hunting, fishing, and public lands. Many of these legislative proposals aim to turn our public hunting lands into recreational OHV areas.  While we are not opposed to the state and private motorized recreation groups procuring new public lands or access agreements ...

Indiana BHA Chapter 2022 Highlights

The Indiana BHA Chapter had an excellent year in 2022. Membership recruitment and engagement was a top priority, with the objective of allowing the Indiana BHA community to grow so that we can make a widespread impact on Indiana conservation initiatives. This objective continually carries into the work that the chapter does, whether it’s through various events, fundraising efforts, policy work, and community outreach. Through membership growth and engagement, we can continue spreading the ...

Public Land Hunters Object to Land Swap in Montana’s Crazy Mountains

Author: Montana BHA
A local conservation group and the U.S. Forest Service have proposed a land exchange that would put an end to decades of confusion over where the public can access the Custer-Gallatin National Forest in Montana’s Crazy Mountains. If the deal goes through, a new 22-mile public trail will wind through the eastern side of the Crazies, about 40 miles northeast of Bozeman. The issue? Hunters say they will lose access to the public lowlands—and the elk that reside there—on the east side of ...

Camp Grayling Expansion in Michigan and Public Access

Camp Grayling expansion may inhibit public land access    Earlier this year, a proposal by the Michigan National Guard to more than double the amount of public lands it already leases from the state of Michigan fast became a hot topic for conservationists in Michigan and beyond.  At its current footprint of 230 square miles, the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center is already the largest National Guard training facility in the country. The National Guard since has proposed adding an ...
