OPINION: Why All Montanans Should Support In-Person Hunters Ed

In Montana, new drivers are required to take an in-person driving test before being allowed to legally operate vehicles. As a high school teacher, I had to be visually observed and evaluated to obtain my credentials. But currently, if you want to pass hunter’s ed in Montana, no such in-person requirement is needed, not even for firearm safety. This must change. In 2020, wanting to limit in-person exposure when the pandemic hit, the Department of FWP pivoted to an entirely web-based course ...

Author: Kyle Mobley
Despite many efforts over the last few months by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) Chairman Aplin, TPWD executive staff, and various legislators (including Chairmen Perry and King, Senator Schwertner, and Rep. Kansas deer tag legislation bad for hunters and hunting

Author: Kansas BHA
Everybody knows there's no such thing as a free lunch, right? Yet there are some folks in the Kansas legislature who think that you don't understand that fact. They think that offering you free deer tags will pull the wool over your eyes and hide what they are actually trying to do. A bill introduced in the Kansas Legislature this session (HB 2079) offers a lot of folks free deer tags, but it has nothing to do with deer tags in the long term. The real goal of that bill is to change hunting ...

The Ghost Bulls of Colorado

Author: David Lien
“Taking the life of such a large, magnificent animal can change you. Looking into its lifeless eyes sticks with you.” It’s early Wednesday morning (September 21, 2022) and nearly pitch black on Highway 160 west of Pagosa Springs. I’m heading home after scouting for rifle season elk hunting locales in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. Outside of town I slow down entering the 40 mph zone. Although fully alert, I’m startled by a bull elk standing statue-still in my lane. With a fraction ...

All the Right Words

By Jake Lunsford   Wind howled through the canyon like a locomotive, snapping fire-blackened aspens and leaving a graveyard of widow-makers and deadfall in its wake. When we set camp, I had been excited to use my new tipi tent – the kind with the three-hands-required-for-assembly wood stove. Now I was going to die in this tent. I looked over at Ronan – a friend I was deployed with twice overseas – for solidarity in our final moments before being pulverized by whatever angry mountain god ...

Welcome to the 118th Congress

On Jan. 3, 2023, the U.S. House of Representatives convened the 118th Congress following midterm elections where Republicans narrowly flipped the chamber. The new majority kicked off a slow and theatrical start with a now-notorious string of votes to choose the Speaker of the House – the longest series of such votes since before the Civil War. After 15 ballots over the course of four days, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was elected speaker following concessions to conservative members of the ...

Weigh in on Bear Management as NJ DEP considers plan and regs

New Jersey BHA is pleased that legal challenges to New Jersey’s 2022 bear hunt have been nullified, the hunt was held and sportsmen and women were able to pursue bears this season. There is still work to be done to secure scientific bear management in our state, including the hunting of bears, into the future. One thing hunters can do right now is let NJ DEP know how we feel about the Bear Management Plan and some of the specific regs — including baiting rules and bear minimum size — by ...
