MT BHA comments during December 22 Commission Meeting

Author: Montana BHA
Montana BHA delivered the following comments to the Commission on December 20th, 2022:   “Chair Robinson, members of the Commission… my name is Kevin Farron and I’m the coordinator for the Montana Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. First, we want to acknowledge the new and improved process we're dealing with here. The outcry this recent 313 proposal has created really illustrates how problematic the previous process was, with commissioners having the ability to amend proposals on the ...

Chimichurri Venison Chops

Author: Aaron Agosto
I am lucky enough to live on enough land that I can hunt out of my back door. Most years, I take a white-tailed doe out there to help fill the freezer. Being able to drag a deer out whole instead of packing it out on my back for a few miles lets me be a little more creative when I butcher. Last year, I decided to experiment a bit and butchered one of the backstraps as bone-in chops. I set them in my freezer for a special occasion. Then, during the spring I was lucky again, and won a Burch ...

An Opening Day Tale

By Leyton Hanneman and Matt Hanneman   ’Twas the night before hunting, when all through the woods,The creatures were stirring and there the bull stood. Our packs were all readied and quivers fitted with care;As we prayed that the moose would wait for us there. The calves and the fawns were all snug in their beds,While visions of rump roast danced in our heads. We arose before dawn and crept into the woods. To call in this big moose was our goal, if we could.Setting a blind, prepared for the long ...

Chasing Quail in Southern Arizona with New Hunters

Bella, my German wiredhaired pointer, rounded the prickly pear cactus and jammed onto a staunch point. I quietly motioned Tyrell and Harrison towards either side of her quivering body. As they approached, the Gambel’s quail rocketed out of the cactus cover. Two shots rang out at precisely the same moment. The bird fell to the ground and Bella was on top it—followed by a quick retrieve. They both had hit the bird! Tyrell and Harrison were participating in a three-day mentored quail hunt with ...

2022 Policy Roundup

Our chapters are constantly working on protecting our public lands, waters, and wildlife. In 2022, they did more than ever before to make sure the North American Model of Conservation remained intact. From corner crossing in Wyoming to desert bighorn stewardship projects in California to bear hunting advocacy in New Jersey, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers chapters were instrumental in battling for the things we as hunters and anglers hold most dear. FEDERAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The Inflation ...

OPINION: Reject East Crazy Mountains land swap proposal

Just like Holland Lake, the U.S. Forest Service is at it again — trying to pull a fast one on the public by putting forward a significant proposal that would negatively impact our public lands, public access and public opportunities. All the while private interests would get exactly what they want. The USFS recently put forth the proposed “East Crazy Inspiration Divide Land Exchange.” The proposal is complex and convoluted, intertwining what should be a simple land exchange in the ...

Drastic Changes to Quality Elk Hunting in District 313 Proposed

Author: Montana BHA
For an outfit that has repeatedly stated their desire to simplify and improve public engagement, a proposed last-minute change in FWP’s hunting regs seems mighty rushed. Long after the biennial season-setting last spring and squashed between two holidays, Montana's Fish & Wildlife Commission’s Vice Chair Tabor is pushing a drastic change to elk hunting in southwestern Montana. Sounds complicated, doesn't it? It is. The change would eliminate a unique, limited-entry 2-week hunting opportunity ...

Pennsylvania BHA Legislative and Policy Roundup 2022

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has had another busy year advocating for our members in Harrisburg. Our board members have regularly visited the capitol to meet with legislators and we’ve used chapter funds to hire Policy Advisor John Kline, giving BHA a constant presence working on our behalf in Harrisburg. We are the only BHA Chapter with a full-time lobbyist. These efforts have allowed us to build relationships with partners, legislators and leaders in our ...
