Wildlife Friendly Fencing Modification on the Gas Hills Highway

On May 1, 2024, BHA habitat stewardship staff joined Biologists and seasonal field staff to modify barbed wire fence along the Gas Hills Highway outside of Lander, Wyoming. This BLM boundary fence was installed over 70 years ago; as a result, it was not built with wildlife friendly practices in mind. Recap: Western NY Allen Lake Trail Project

On June 1st volunteers from the New York Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers assisted NYS DEC West Almond Foresters with the construction of a new foot trail around Allen Lake. The trail begins near the ADA compliant fishing dock and traverses through many different forest cover types before looping back to the parking area. North Dakota BHA Inventories 50 Miles of Fence on BLM

Last weekend, North Dakota BHA board members spent the weekend inventorying nearly 50 miles of fence using ATVs on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Big Gumbo represents the last continuous sage steppe habitat for Greater sage grouse (GRSG) in the state of North Dakota, holding the only active leks found on BLM parcels within the area. New Mexico BHA: Fence Removal on the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument

The Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument was established in 2013 and comprises 242,500 acres with an additional 3,700 acres recently added.  It lies in northern New Mexico and is bisected by the Rio Grande Gorge.  The area is fragmented by miles of fencing demarcating grazing allotments.  Many of these fences bisect important migration routes between mountain ranges.  This area has resident pronghorn, elk and deer but is also a very important wintering ground. ...

NM BHA Repairs Trick Tank Fencing Alongside USFS

On May 18, 2024 New Mexico BHA Vice Chair Mark Zschoche led a group of BHA volunteers on yet another spring work project. The exclosure fencing around the Sargent KV Trick Tank had been damaged in recent years by wildfire, causing wires to become brittle or broken.  Trees had also fallen on the fencing in many places.
