On May 9-10, BHA volunteers teamed up with the BLM biology department of the Upper Snake Field office to improve fencing around riparian areas in Stinking Springs Canyon Idaho. EVENT RECAP: Phil's World Fence Pull and Clean Up

I recently walked into the local BLM field office and asked what BHA could do to help them with habitat improvement projects and they were ecstatic. We immediately got this project on the books.  We had 11 BHA volunteers show up at 9am, Saturday March 29th, and after a safety briefing from the BLM field officer we hiked up nearly 2 miles to the northern end of the area. There we found a number of rolls of woven wire fence, T posts, and other fencing materials, along with about 1/3 mile ...

On Base: Creek Restoration in Historic Habitat

On a damp October morning away from the noise of I-5 and life's usual distractions, a group of volunteers huddle near a white canopy. Braving the cold, they wait to hear the plan for the day of work they had sacrificed their Saturday for. Most everyone here has a direct association with the base, but few know that Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is home to the largest expanse of glacial outwash prairie. Out of all historical prairies of this nature, only 5% still exist, almost all of which ...

Backcountry Stewardship in the Bootheel of New Mexico

The Bootheel region of New Mexico is normally viewed from inside a car speeding down I-10.  From the interstate it appears desolate and dry.  Large wide expanses of creosote bush and mesquite fade off into distant rocky peaks.  If you have ever hunted or hiked in this landscape, you know that it is full of life to be discovered.   Javelina scattered along the hillsides searching for barrel cactus fruit, mule deer browsing the mesquite bushes, Gambel's quail in the washes, pronghorn in the ...
