Hunting for Sustainability: UW Stevens Point

CHECK OUT OUR RECAP OF THE WEEKEND HERE!

Have you been interested in hunting but haven't had the chance to learn? Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is offering a free, all-inclusive program that will introduce you to turkey hunting including sessions on firearm safety, access to public lands, ethical hunting, the history of conservation, and how to care for and butcher turkey.

You will stay on-site at the Wisconsin Lions Club in Stevens Point for the weekend where you will meet your fellow classmates and workshop leaders. You'll spend Saturday morning in the classroom learning the ins and outs of hunting turkeys in Wisconsin and Saturday afternoon at the Izaak Walton League Conservation Center shooting range learning firearm safety and how to pattern a shotgun. Sunday morning, you'll head out to the field for a turkey hunt, where you'll put your new knowledge into action in the field under the guidance of a mentor. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to try different wild game meals that will be provided throughout the weekend.

Workshop and mentored hunt will occur in Zone 3 during period E of the spring turkey season. Participants will need to purchase a bonus harvest authorization for Zone 3, Period E (May 18 - 24, 2022) before the workshop, which will be available starting 10:00 am CT on March 23rd through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Go Wild Online Portal. In order to purchase a license, verifed completion of hunter's education is required. You can complete hunter's education online through the Wisconsin DNR HERE. While a valid hunting license will be required to actively hunt on Sunday, you may still participate in the workshop without one and be an observer on an active hunt. Total cost for turkey tags and prerequisites is $15.25 for residents and $20.25 for non-residents. If this presents significant financial difficulties for you, please reach out to [email protected] for options.

Fill out the form below to apply. Deadline to apply is Monday, May 9th. You will be notified on or before May 2nd regarding your application to the workshop. You must be able to attend the pre-event meeting (date TBD) or make arrangements to meet with leaders before the workshop to participate.

*Workshop is open to everyone but students and new/novice hunters will be prioritized.

The application period is now closed.
