BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 177: Salmon Source to Sea Expedition with Libby Tobey and Hailey Thompson

In April of 2022, Libby Tobey, Hailey Thompson and Brooke Hess skied into Marsh Creek in Idaho’s Sawtooth Range, towing their kayaks and a sled full of camping gear. The goal: trace the route of anadromous fish from the source of the Salmon River to the Pacific Ocean and advocate removing the four dams on the Lower Snake River that block that migration and are killing that river system. 78 days and 1000 miles away down the tiniest tributaries to the massive whitewater of the main rivers, ...

Recap: Three Rivers WMA - Public Land Packout

Author: New York BHA
NY BHA had a great day Saturday March 30th, 2024 with the Public Land Packout at the Three Rivers Wildlife Management Area outside Syracuse, New York. This public land offers hiking, abundant hunting opportunities for deer, waterfowl and small game, trapping, and fishing and they had a great time working to maintain this WMA as part of our stewardship agreement with the NYSDEC.  BHA members and volunteers collected nearly 50 bags of trash to help clean up this area!   Thank you to all the ...

Kentucky Senate Bill 3 Defeated

Author: Kentucky BHA
FRANKFORT, KY -- The Kentucky Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers helped defeat a dangerous bill in the statehouse that would have made conservation more difficult in the state. Senate Bill 3 would have placed the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission under the Commissioner of Agriculture and attached the Department of Fish and Wildlife to the Department of Agriculture, two moves that would have reduced the independence of the DFW and complicated the ability of its commissioners to ...

Mule Deer Reuben

Author: Micah Fields
I’m a daydreamer at heart, and I spend a lot of time fantasizing about recipes during the big game hunting season. Between the idle hours spent driving to trailheads, hiking to glassing knobs in the dark, and waiting for first light, my mind frequently wanders to winter and spring, when I’ll (hopefully) transform the meat from a successful harvest into nourishing and delicious meals for my family and friends. Part of this is purely logistical—I need to plan what to use and how, in order to ...

Fish Tacos for a Special Occasion

Author: Cody Grewing

For the boatless angler, or even the boated angler for that matter, there is no better time to catch a meal of fresh fish than spring. Whether casting off rocky points for walleyes, probing back bays for panfish or pike, or propping up a chair on a windswept shoreline for hungry channel cats, the arrival of spring means opportunities aplenty. Now while I’m all for keeping a well-stocked freezer, fresh fish is the best fish. For many, spring’s bountiful harvests are a great opportunity to ...

Hunting For Experience: Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Oral History Project

Author: David Lien
During December 2023 I was contacted by a University of Montana student about taking part in a Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) Oral History Project. “I am a student enrolled at the University of Montana-Missoula,” she explained. “My class, Hunting History in America, is currently working on a public history project regarding the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. Part of the project involves an hour to two hour recorded interview, kind of like a biography.” I initially endeavored to steer ...
