Bill overturning 'Cottonwood' decision advances

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Montana BHA
With a temporary measure set to sunset next year, a bill that would permanently reverse an appellate court’s decision on when federal agencies must consult on endangered species advanced from a U.S. Senate committee Thursday. Montana Republican Steve Daines and West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin co-sponsored an amendment to Senate Bill 2561, aimed at reversing the 2015 “Cottonwood Decision," before the bill passed from committee Thursday. The decision is named for the Bozeman-based ...

Colorado BHA Tag Allocation Observations & Information

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: David Lien
Colorado BHA Tag Allocation Observations & Information This issue of resident vs. nonresident (and landowner) elk (and other) tag allocations has been a controversial issue in multiple Western states over the years, including Colorado. In addition, during 2017 the Colorado BHA Executive Leadership Team/Board adopted a position statement on Big ...

OPINION: Pick or choose: Montana hunters lose

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Kevin Farron
FWP's elk advisory group has proposed many productive ideas regarding shoulder seasons, the hunt roster, new approaches to block management and improving hunter behavior. But their proposal to ‘pick your season/weapon’ misses the mark. While the intent of reducing hunting pressure on public lands is solid - and this hunting change is likely inevitable if Montana continues to grow in population, access to inaccessible elk isn't improved, and hunters fail to show up when it matters - now ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 136: Striped Bass with Mike Woods and Chris Borgatti

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Thomas Plank
Striped bass are arguably the most important fish – culturally and economically – on the Atlantic seaboard. And right now, anglers are spearheading a push to conserve and rebuild striper populations, which have suffered in recent decades because of overfishing and poor habitat. What’s the future of this iconic Eastern species, and what opportunities can we create to ensure our continued ability to fish for striped bass? Hal talks with Mike Woods, chair of BHA’s New England chapter, recipient ...

Black River WMA: Digging Into Public Waterfowl Hunting in Arkansas

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Arkansas BHA Chapter
Earlier this spring a concerned member contacted our board with a question about Dave Donaldson Black River Wildlife Management Area in Northeast Arkansas. With all the news and publicity concerning green tree reservoirs (GTRs) at Bayou Meto and Hurricane Lake WMAs, why hadn’t there been any news about Black River? (Side note: if you’re not familiar with this topic, check out Clay Newcomb’s Bear Grease podcast episodes 36-39, where he covers the habitat problem that is generations in the ...

Smoked Pike Burgers

[EasyDNNnewsLocalizedText:Author]: Adam Miller
The noble northern pike does not get the respect it deserves, but I will die on this hill, violently swinging a red and white spoon like a medieval flail as I face the charging hordes of  walleye purists, wielding whatever lure of the day they carry designed to catch more fishermen than fish. Whether that pike be fried, baked, broiled, skewered in kabobs, pickled and canned, poached as if lobster, or even the eggs salted for a poor man’s caviar, I will put it up against anything (and ...
