Volunteer With Montana BHA

Are you interested in taking the next step in your conservation journey as a hunter and/or angler? If so, we encourage you to apply to join our Montana Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) Chapter Board! We are currently looking to fill the following positions:

Open Board positions:

  • Stewardship Chair
  • Events Chair
  • Southwest Montana member at large
  • Eastern Montana member at large
  • Helena Valley member at large

***Application Period is Closed***

As a Montana Chapter Board member, you will help us design and implement our strategic approach to enhance and maintain hunting and fishing access for sportsmen and women throughout Montana while ensuring our wildlife management follows the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. You are a conservation-minded individual who will commit to actively uphold our hunting and fishing heritage and the ecological health of our wild public lands, waters and wildlife.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a current BHA member, have Montana residency, be at least 18 years in age, and be willing to serve a 3-year term.  You must be willing to act in good faith and in a manner that the Chapter Board Member believes to be in the best interest of BHA and consistent with BHA’s mission and priorities. All board members are expected to sign a Chapter Leader Service Agreement that includes a conflict of interest disclosure, position description, privacy policy and code of conduct.

Below you will find a detailed description for each position. While these descriptions provide an overview of the type of candidate we’re looking for, we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn’t perfectly align with what’s listed.

We prioritize individuals who are passionate about our public lands, waters, and wildlife and are willing to learn and jump in to help out where needed. You should be aware that board members are all volunteers (i.e., you will not receive any monetary compensation), which means you’ll have to balance your board responsibilities with your day-to-day lives. Our existing board members are here to mentor you and ensure that you are prepared to succeed in your new role.

If you are interested in applying for any of these positions, please fill out the application form by February 28, 2026. We will begin scheduling interviews with selected candidates as applications are submitted and hope to vote on the positions at our April 14, 2026 board meeting. A two-thirds Board vote is required for final approval.

Expectations for all board members:

  • Must remain in good standing with BHA membership
  • Must be willing and able to participate on Basecamp community site
  • Must be willing to plan and/or help execute events
  • Attend and participate in a monthly Board Member call and annual retreat
