Hunting for Sustainability: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

CHECK OUT OUR RECAP OF THE WEEKEND HERE!

Thank you to our partners at Modern Carnivore for helping make our workshop a success!

Have you been interested in hunting but haven't had the chance to learn? Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, in collaboration with Modern Carnivore, is offering a free, all-inclusive program that will introduce you to turkey hunting including sessions on firearm safety, access to public lands, ethical hunting, the history of conservation, and how to care for and butcher turkey.

Students who are accepted to the workshop will be required to attend pre-event meetings and complete Modern Carnivore's Hunting Camp Live Turkey Curriculum. For the immersive portion of the workshop, you will spend the weekend on-site with your fellow students and workshop leaders at Agate Lake Resort in Nisswa, MN. Workshop includes range/shooting safety and practice, educational presentations, discussions, field scouts, and turkey hunting under the guidance of a mentor. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to try different wild game meals that will be provided throughout the weekend.

A valid turkey tag will be required to participate in the mentored hunt. If you are a brand new hunter, you will need to complete hunter's education in order to purchase a hunting license. You can complete hunter's education online here. Once hunter's ed is completed, you can purchase your turkey tag online here starting March 1st. We will be hunting during period C and the permit area you should use when buying their tag should either be 507 or 508. If you are unable to complete hunter's ed or don't want to actively hunt, you may still sign up for the workshop and participate in mentored hunts as an observer.

Resident turkey tags (code 610) cost $26 and nonresident turkey tags (611) cost $96. If you are enrolled full-time at a Minnesota school, and are a non-resident, you can access in-state pricing. However, this CANNOT be done online--you must call the DNR Licensing Center or visit a local licensing agent. You'll need to provide proof of university enrollment.

If this seems like a lot of information, don't worry, it is! We are happy to help you purchase tags at the pre-event meeting. Just ensure you have completed hunter's ed by that time.

Fill out the form below to apply. You will be notified on or before April 15th regarding your application to the workshop. Accepted students must agree to complete all online coursework prior to the in-person workshop and attend a pre-event meeting (date TBD) in order to participate.

*Workshop is open to everyone but students and new/novice hunters will be prioritized.

The application period is now closed.
