Come out and celebrate Public Lands Day by joining the WV Chapter of BHA for a squirrel hunt and public lands packout on Saturday September 23 beginning at 7am at the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area. Located just 18 miles west of Martinsburg and with nearly 23,000 acres of rugged terrain covered with a mature forest situated on two parallel mountain ridges, Sleepy Creek WMA is an eastern panhandle haven for hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
A quick timeline of the day looks like this:
7:30 AM: Meet at Sleepy Creek WMA Campground location HERE. The campground is directly west of Forest Road 827 and can be seen in onX maps designated with a camping symbol. Introductions along with member Q&A. A quick firearm/hunter safety briefing will take place prior to hitting the woods.
8 AM - 2PM: Hunt and packout. Attendees will have the option to spread out as they see fit across the WMA. While hunting, attendees are encouraged to collect any trash or litter from across the WMA. Feel free to take any breaks and find some places access points that need a little cleaning up!
2 pm - 4pm: Squirrel field dressing party. During this time folks can share any tricks they have for dressing squirrels while talking great ways to prep these tasty critters for the table!
Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks, lunch, and plenty of fluids for the day. We also recommend you dress appropriately for the occasion.
6 pm: Public Lands Day Pint Night at Black Draft Farm & Distillery
After all the great fun in the woods bagging some bushytails and cleaning up our public lands, join us at Black Draft Farm & Distillery for a Public Lands Pint Night from 6-9pm! Here we can swap stories, tips, and tactics. Even if you can't make the squirrel bash, we hope you can join us for great food, drinks, and wonderful conversations to wrap up the 2023 Public Lands Day!
RSVP below so that we can plan on your attendance and we will see you soon!
