BHA Armed Forces Initiative is looking for 10 volunteers to help pull fence in Montana's Madison Valley.
The Madison Valley is a critical winter migration route for elk, antelope, and mule deer. Pullng a few miles of fence in this area will critically reduce migration casualties in the Yellowstone antelope herd. In exchange for your efforts we are working with the National Parks Conservation Association and local landowners to allow hunting permission along this corridor this coming October.
(Note: you must have a valid antelope tag to hunt in Montana, this habitat project oppertunity does not negate the tag allocation and draw process)
What to expect:
Volunteer days begin on site at 10AM and run until around 3PM. Lunch and snacks are provided, as well as any tools and protective gear required. Please wear close-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Projects typically go on rain or shine so be prepared for hot temperatures or rainy days. The project day involves chatting about wildlife connectivity and fence design, learning how to use fencing tools, and removing or modifying fencing.
The nature of the work:
The work is fun and rewarding, but it is not easy. Please only sign up if you feel comfortable walking on uneven terrain, bending over, and lifting heavy objects. Any children must be accompanied by an adult. We don’t recommend participation for children under 12. Barbed wire is sharp and can be dangerous!
The plan is to remove an old fence that wildlife have been getting caught in. If we finish early, or if anyone prefers a less physically demanding task, we will add flagging on a top wire of fence to increase visibility for elk and birds.
