Description: 

We are seeking one individual with the talent, passion and initiative to promote Backcountry Hunters & Anglers mission to collaborate with state and federal land management agencies on organization and implementation of BHA’s fish and wildlife habitat stewardship work.  The New Mexico Conservation Stewardship Coordinator will work directly with BHA stewardship staff, volunteers and partners to advance meaningful fish and wildlife habitat conservation and restoration work on public lands and waters. This national BHA staff member will work under supervision of the Stewardship Manager.

The ideal candidate will work with a high level of autonomy and be flexible and organized in a fast-paced work environment. They will be able to quickly analyze and solve problems, collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, assist with public land stewardship fundraising efforts, prepare professional reports that accurately document activities, adhere to standards of confidentiality and communicate effectively. The successful candidate will represent BHA with integrity and champion the mission and values in all facets of their work.

Primary Responsibilities: 

The New Mexico Conservation Stewardship Coordinator (TEMP) will engage in the following:

  • Work in close coordination with federal land management staff to carry our habitat maintenance and inventory projects in Southeast New Mexico. Work will be focused on water infrastructure (catchments and guzzlers) inventory. 
  • Work in coordination with BHA field staff to inspire, mobilize and support volunteers to assist with the implementation of grant and partner-funded public land and water stewardship projects.
  • In coordination with other staff and chapter leaders, build new partnerships with state and federal agencies and other non-profit organizations.
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisory staff.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Preferably a hunter and/or angler.  
  • Willing to work flexible hours in the field within Southeast New Mexico up to 75% of the time, including periodic extended travel to project sites.  
  • Previous experience with a public land management agency and/or with nonprofit volunteer management is preferred.  
  • Proven understanding of state and federal land management agency planning and project management processes.
  • Must conduct work with integrity, good humor and a focus on developing partnerships, building trust and maintaining strong professional relationships.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work with and interact with sportsmen and women and have a general knowledge of current and historical conservation issues, economics and the current political landscape.  
  • Must be an innovative and resourceful self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.  
  • Must believe in and demonstrate a commitment to BHA's work and mission (please address in cover letter).  
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Must have reliable 4x4 vehicle.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and have a valid driver’s license.  

This is a seasonal 3.5 month contracted position with no benefits provided.  Contractor must have their own reliable vehicle.  BHA will cover contractor’s travel costs within the region to include per diem meals for field projects with necessary overnight travel.

Starting Salary: $3,500 per month

Location: Field work will be based out of Southeast, New Mexico (Carlsbad area)
