Last month we reported that NCORPE was going to open up an additional 880 acres to hunting. Actually its 960 acres! Thank you NCORPE!!!

- More good news! The mile long public minimum maintenance road that is the only entrance into Wapiti Wildlife Management Area recently had gravel added to its base permitting access to this great public hunting land! It essentially allows access to that WMA that was very sporadic (at best) in the past. You might remember NEBHA’s involvement in trying to improve access into the area whereby we helped facilitate a brush removal and gravel acquisition project between NGPC and the Lincoln County Roads Department (see links below) along that road.
NEBRASKA FEBRUARY NEWS
NEBRASKA MAY NEWS
NEBHA sincerely thanks Scott Aden of NGPC and Jason Schulz of the Lincoln County Roads Department for improving access to this key piece of public hunting land!
- Please remember our state BHA Board is completely composed of volunteers; there are no paid members. Along those lines, we are seeking to fill Board member slots from the northwestern portion of the state. We don’t have Board representation there now, so if you, or someone you know, might be willing to serve on the Board please email us!
ACTION NEEDED
- As noted in the last newsletter, the Chapter sent a letter to all the Central Platte Natural Resources District Board members asking them to open a piece of our public land (B1reservoir) to archery deer and shotgun turkey hunting. We have not received a response so we still need help. Please contact any or all of the directors, especially those in subdistrict 1, expressing your support for this public land access https://www.cpnrd.org/about/directors/ or better yet give them a call 3083808943
UPCOMING EVENTS
- There will be a NEBHA sponsored volunteer event on July 11th south of Gothenburg. We will be reposting boundary signs on OFW enrolled land that was affected by fires this past spring. Sign up HERE. (Vice Chair Bill Grossnicklaus helped put out the fire on this OFW parcel so it has particular significance beyond BHA.)
- We have a Fence Removal effort in conjunction with Nebraska Bowhunters Association in July 30-August 2 at Halsey National Forest https://nebraskabowhunters.com/Jamboree23 Join us at Halsey for this this great stewardship event! The actual fence removal will be at 1p July 31st. We will meet at Natick Campground. Volunteer event sign up will be emailed and posted to social media.
- The Pint Night scheduled for June 10th in Omaha was cancelled. We very much need membership engagement events in the Lincoln and Omaha areas where a majority of our members reside. If you are interested in hosting an event in those areas, such as a social (e.g., pint night, access rally….) or stewardship (e.g., trash pick up, fence removal,…) event please let us know!
REMINDERS
- Nominate a PUBLIC LANDS HERO!! The Nebraska Chapter’s “Public Lands Hero Award” is presented annually to an individual who has provided dedicated and sustained service towards improving access to, and/or increasing the amount of, public lands available for hunters and anglers in the state. Anyone who has demonstrated this effort can be nominated including, but not limited to, state, federal, local, and non-governmental agency personnel. Nominations can be made throughout the year by any member or supporter of the Nebraska BHA. Nominations can be sent to the Board at nebraska@backcountryhunters.org and should include a detailed description of the nominee’s accomplishments.
- Please spend a few minutes when you’re out on our public lands to clean up the area a bit. ANY public access lands are good! Not only will this help the habitat and improve the experience of future visitors but also help with how neighboring landowners view public land and the people that use them. LEAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!
