The Kansas Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is partnering with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) to co-sponsor a photo contest in celebration of the 25th anniversary of KDWPT’s incredibly successful Walk-In Hunting Access (WIHA) program! Pine Tree — The Community Speaks Through Action & Service

Kip Kruger
On Saturday October 31, over 40 local residents, supporters, and community members gathered on a crisp Arkansas morning at the Pine Tree Research Station headquarters to help pick up trash and show support for keeping the property open to the public.  As the sun gained distance from the horizon, individuals and families started streaming in, and very quickly stories were being shared along with pictures from cell phones, passed back and forth. It became evident very quickly to this outsider ...

The Legislative Finance Committee Evaluates NMDGF

Joel Gay
NOTE: The original post contained an error about EPLUS harvest reporting requirements. It has been corrected here. A new report by the powerful Legislative Finance Committee says New Mexico elk hunters have been short-changed by the Department of Game and Fish over the years, through the controversial E-PLUS program that gives a substantial portion of licenses to landowners. The report, released Oct. 28, encourages the State Game Commission to revise E-PLUS to expand its benefits to ...

Ohio BHA Chapter
Ohio BHA's Policy & Advocacy Committee hopes you follow our journey as we learn about the impacts of lead in hunting and angling, confront our own misconceptions about the subject, and consider voluntary and incremental adoptions of non-lead alternatives as we seek to become better stewards of our public lands and waters and encourage additional research and continued education and communication. As anglers we have an innate connection to rivers, streams, lakes and the larger biotic ...

Michigan Chapter Breaks Down Proposition 20-1

Jason Meekhof
The Michigan chapter of BHA is the voice for our wild public lands, waters, and wildlife in our great state and seeks to inform members on issues affecting our members as well as public lands and waters in Michigan.  Currently at issue on the upcoming ballot is Proposition 20-1, which would change the definition of projects eligible for funding by one of the foremost public land acquisition funds in Michigan — the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund. This ballot measure has effectively ...

Introducing the Public Land Owner Stewardship Fund: Five Clubs Receive Funding for Local Stewardship Projects

Kylie Schumacher
BHA often touts the boots-on-the-ground, grassroots efforts of our organization and perhaps nothing embodies this more than the stewardship efforts of our college clubs. As collective owners of millions of acres of public land throughout North America it’s important that we take care of the land in the same way we care for our rifles, shotguns, and fly rods. Each year, clubs complete two work service projects in their local community. These projects build tangible field skills, leadership, ...

CWD In Tennessee: How Hunters Can Help

Nicholas Hendricks
CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease), which is virtually undetectable with the human eye, has been found in deer in Tennessee since 2018. Unlike Blue Tongue or Fibromas, CWD can persist in a herd without any noticeable sign to the average outdoorsman, -woman or other deer. This makes it especially pernicious and harmful, and CWD has been shown to be linked to declines in herd signs in states where it has existed for long periods of time. As of now, no evidence shows whether or not CWD can be ...

New York BHA Chapter Update – Fall 2020

New York BHA
From the Chair: What a year this has been! I hope this finds everyone in good health. Like most the New York chapter has been figuring out how to navigate in the new climate we now live in. The last in-person event was the Public Grouse film showing in Syracuse. The event was well attended, and we had a lot more planned until Covid 19 hit. Since then we have added two teams: Our Regional Events Coordinator Team, who recently hosted a Virtual Learn to Hunt series and plans to host more in the ...

10/16/20 NMDGF Game Commission Recap

Joel Gay
Habitat restoration efforts in New Mexico could receive a major infusion of cash after the State Game Commission agreed with NM BHA and other sportsmen’s organizations to bring the cost of a Habitat Stamp up to date. The $5 stamp has not increased since 1986, losing more than half of its buying power to inflation. A majority of commissioners, meeting online on Friday, signaled they would support raising the stamp fee to $10 and to inflation-proof the stamp going forward, as part of a broader ...

New York hosts Virtual Learn to Hunt Series

New York BHA
Throughout the Public Lands Month of September, a few of the members of the New York Chapter of BHA put together a series of Virtual Learn to Hunt Zoom meetings. The series were targeted towards the many new hunters that had taken their Hunters Education in the spring and summer. The increase in people taking the education and safety course, as well as the dramatic increase in license sales this year in New York, indicates that more and more of us are taking to the woods and outdoors to ...
