Final Action Needed: Oregon BHA, Outdoor Groups, Ask for Your Support

Author: Ian Isaacson
After months of close collaboration, Oregon BHA, Oregon Outdoor Council, Oregon Hunters Association and Traditional Archers of Oregon have reached consensus and submitted a letter urging the ODFW Commission to adopt staff’s current proposal of maintaining a statewide general archery elk season for all units not moving to controlled and the creation of the Eagle Cap Zone which will combine five of the units moving to controlled into one area. In addition to supporting staff’s current ...

OR BHA Contributes $10k to Minam River Access

Author: Jamie Dawson
In June, the OR BHA Chapter board voted in support of a $10,000 donation towards Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and ODFW's efforts to purchase land to expand the Minam River Wildlife Area northeast of La Grande. The purchase would move 15,573 acres of land from private ownership (Hancock Land Management) to state-owned, safeguarding this important fish & wildlife habitat for generations to come. It's part of an active migration corridor, and hosts spring Chinook, steelhead, bull trout and ...

Oregon BHA Supports Alternatives to ODFW’s 2022 Archery Elk Proposal

Author: Ian Isaacson
In March of this year, representatives from your Oregon Backcountry Hunters & Anglers board were invited by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Archery Elk project team to discuss the potential archery elk changes for the 2022 hunting regulation cycle. The goal of these meetings was to review issues identified in the 2021 hunt development process, and discuss additional information and concepts developed since that time.  Oregon BHA appreciates the decision made last year by the ...

Hike to Hunt: An Oregon Success Story

Author: Sam Platt
In 2017, I was fat, frustrated and looking for my next excuse for a failed season. I’d hunted 20 archery seasons without killing a bull and it was never my fault. It was too hot, or too crowded or the ODFW had set the season dates too early. As long as I didn't have to take accountability for my personal shortcomings I was able to accept another season without killing a bull. Over the years the pressure of coming up short and whatever excuse I’d hung my hat on, the previous year began to ...

Fall 2019 Oregon Chapter News

The 2019 summer has proven to be both busy and trying for NDBHA.  We’ve dealt with multiple project cancellations due to weather and logistical issues. However, we were able to complete the Whitetail Picnic Area renovation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service in July.  In addition to work projects, we’ve been refining our event formats to make better use of time and exposure. We’ve started to roll out new events like “Bows and Beers” to add a little flavor to our event calendar. ...

Oregon BHA Fights Misguided Legislation of Elk Management

The west has seen a rash of legislation attempting to expand the ability of private interests to manage elk herds. Instead of deferring to the biologists, land managers and agencies tasked with sustaining healthy cervid populations, several Oregon legislators chose to draft bills that would erode management authority for Oregon's elk. One bill, SB 301, is progressing through the legislature despite dangerously vague terms and little to no assurance of mutual benefit to Oregon’s Elk or the ...
