Author: Jamie Dawson
Do you hunt, fish, forage, or camp with your family on the Wallowa-Whitman, Umatilla, or Malheur National Forest? If so, it’s time for you to get involved!  This summer, the US Forest Service re-started the forest planning process for those three National Forests, which in total cover over 5 million acres of public lands. HB 3086 Passes

Author: Ian Isaacson
In a monumental achievement, HB 3086, which restructures the ODFW Commission's selection map, has been passed with unanimous support in the House and near unanimity in the Senate. The hard work throughout the session to keep this bill alive has paid off, and we consider this a significant milestone for all who supported the bill. Previously, the Commission was aligned with congressional districts, supplemented by two at-large positions, one each from the east and west sides. The new statute ...

BLM Fence Prep Recap

Author: Chris Hager
On Saturday, June 27th, Oregon BHA Members alongside staff from the USFS and BLM ascended on public lands bordering the Deschutes National Forest to prep fence line for future retro fitting. Brush was cleared away from the fence to allow for future volunteers to replace the top and bottom strands with wildlife friendly smooth wire. Currently the fence consists of 3 to 4 strands of barbed wire and poses a thread for migrating ungulates and other wildlife. The collaboration between the Oregon ...

Senate Committee Takes Action on Recreation, Conservation

A May 17th business meeting held by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee was a highly anticipated opportunity to advance multiple conservation and recreation policy priorities supported by Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. It marked the first time any of these bills had received a review in the 118th Congress.   Typically, a business meeting – where legislation is amended or marked up, and then voted on by committee members – is preceded by a legislative hearing. However, the ...

HB 3086: UPDATE

Author: Ian Isaacson
The progress of HB 3086, the river basin model for ODFW Commission structure, was unfortunately stalled early last week. The -4 amendment had enough votes to pass out of the House Agriculture, Land Use, Natural Resources, and Water Committee, but it was instead referred without amendments or recommendations to the House Rules Committee. It appears that some groups, in the eleventh hour, expressed their concerns to the committee members, as well as the House Speaker’s office and the ...

Oregon's Adopt-A-Lek Program

Author: Chris Hager
What is it? Oregon has a volunteer opportunity between hunting seasons in the high desert, in the state’s southeastern region. Oregon has one of the nation’s largest populations of Greater sage grouse, behind states like Wyoming and Nevada. The bird is found throughout the Great Basin, and Intermountain west, inhabiting the Sagebrush Biome. Declines in sage grouse have led many non-profit groups and support from government agencies attempting to keep the bird from ...
