New York BHA Spring 2016 Update

Deer hunting regulations can unite or divide hunters in New York State. For several years, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has been considering regulation changes. After a multi-year study of hunter attitudes, the DEC elected to retain the existing regulations. This decision means that new mandatory antler restrictions and reduced season lengths are off the table for the foreseeable future. No matter which side you’re on, it’s heartening to see the DEC considering the ...

New England BHA Spring 2016 Update

Board member Matt McKenzie of Connecticut submitted a letter on behalf of the chapter in support of the proposed Great Thicket National Wildlife Refuge in New England. The plan would protect habitat for the threatened New England cottontail and manage for important young forest habitat, which is becoming increasingly rare in coastal and southern New England. The USFWS proposes to acquire lands from willing sellers in southern Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut and on Cape Cod. ...

Nevada BHA Spring 2016 Update

On Feb. 22, BHA members joined in a pro-public lands rally in Reno in response to presidential candidates’ cries to seize public lands and transfer them to state control. BHA members were among nearly 100 people to cry, “Keep public lands in public hands!”  We spearheaded discussions within county and state wildlife commissions to consider legislative prohibitions on drones and computerized trigger mechanisms for hunting purposes. We also took a stance limiting, if not banning, the use of ...

Minnesota BHA Spring 2016 Update

Minnesota BHA was recognized as BHA’s Chapter of the Month for November 2015 and has built on that momentum going into 2016. We started the year by submitting comments on the Department of Natural Resources’ draft strategic management plan for elk in Minnesota (2016-2020). Erik Jensen, Mark Norquist and Spencer Shaver tabled at the sportsmen’s show in St. Paul for Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters. More than 500 sportsmen and women signed a petition to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area ...

Idaho BHA Spring 2016 Update

Idaho Chapter leaders held our annual meeting in January. The meeting initiated what has been our most productive quarter yet. We added Eric Crawford of Moscow and J.D. Miller of Boise to the Idaho Board. Additionally, we kicked off the “Habitat Watch” program, similar to the Forest Watchman program that has been successful in other states. Thanks to Dan Herrig for coordinating this program. To learn more, contact Dan or one of the co-chairs. Events have resulted in the addition of 30-plus ...

British Columbia BHA Spring 2016 Update

The BC Chapter had a busy winter. We hosted the Hunting Film Tour at Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre on Feb. 27. This is our chapter’s annual fundraiser and membership drive event and an opportunity to promote BHA values to hunters in our area. Thank you to Committee Chair Alan Duffy and his committee members for another outstanding BC BHA event. We doubled our attendance from last year with a crowd of 280 people, including many young hunters. Our fundraising swag included 2 rifle packages, a ...

Alaska BHA Spring 2016 Update

With great sadness the Alaska chapter bids farewell to our long-term chair Mark Richards. Mark has taken a position with an Alaska-based hunting organization, and while he will be sorely missed, he is still very much on the scene advocating for wildlife and hunters alike in the 49th state. Mark is a founding member of AK BHA and has been a tireless champion for wildlife, habitat and hunting since the beginning. Thank you for all you have done, Mark. The Alaska chapter is pleased to announce ...
