Happy Conservation Holidays from Alaska BHA

Author: Anonym
Great news for Alaska's Public Lands to wrap up 2024!  On December 8, 2024, a significant win for conservation was achieved when an amendment mandating the Department of the Interior to permit the 211-mile Ambler Industrial Road was quietly removed from the final draft of the National Defense Authorization Act during conference negotiations.  This victory wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless advocacy of hunters, anglers, and committed conservation ...

Smoked Goose Blueberry Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Smoked Goose Blueberry Grilled Cheese Sandwich      Growing up in the Midwest, I always had an ample amount of Canada geese breasts in the freezer. Since I stopped buying meat altogether, I found I needed some sort of substitution for lunch meat. This is when I recognized the abundance of goose meat could come in handy. I decided to begin smoking most of my goose breasts, vacuum sealing, and then freezing. I then thaw, slice thin, and use as a lunch meat substitute. I’ve used all kind of ...

Valley County is for Public Land Owners

Author: Nate Collins
As the Utah lawsuit to seize our public lands rages on, some of our elected officials in Idaho are jumping on Utah’s bandwagon to destroy our public land heritage. In October we saw Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador demonstrate brazen disregard for Idahoan’s love of our wild spaces when he submitted an amicus brief to the Supreme Court voicing his support of the state of Utah. And last week we saw Valley County Commissioners attempt to insert themselves into the wrong side of this ...

4,000 Acres of Added Public Land in Indiana

Author: Indiana BHA
New Public Land Acquisition a Win for Us All! As you’ve probably already heard, Indiana DNR recently acquired 4,000 acres in Sullivan County. In a world where so much conservation news is about the loss of habitat, access, and opportunity, this is fantastic news! The new conservation area, Busseron Creek Fish & Wildlife Area (FWA), will be familiar to some Hoosier hunters and anglers. The property, once leased by the DNR, used to be known at Minnehaha FWA. In 2016, the leasing arrangement ...

Waterfowl Banding at Creamers Field

Photo by Nick Schaefer The only thing that I like more than hunting ducks has to be banding them. Banding ducks consists of capturing ducks live, putting a numerated metal band around their leg then releasing them unharmed. Most often the bands are not GPS capable but rather rely on hunter and photographer reporting to help build an understanding of the health of the waterfowl population. The process for duck capturing varies depending on the project.     Photos by Melanie ...

Sourdough Cougar Claws

By Melissa Hendrickson   What better way to celebrate the rejection of Proposition 127 in Colorado, the citizen initiative that tried to ban mountain lion hunting, than baking up a delicious treat using rendered mountain lion fat? This jar of fat was reserved for special occasions as it was my husband’s first mountain lion and our first time cooking and baking with cat fat. If you don’t happen to have any cougar fat on hand, this recipe can be easily substituted with any other fat you might ...
