Alberta BHA Opposes Grassy Mountain Coal Project, New Coal Policy

As passionate hunters and anglers in Alberta, the Alberta BHA board is concerned regarding the Benga Mining Limited’s proposed Grassy Mountain Coal Project in the Livingstone region of Southwestern Alberta and the rescission of A Coal Development Policy for Alberta (the Coal Policy). We do not support the approval of the Grassy Mountain Coal Project, nor the rescission of the Coal Policy, which was done without appropriate stakeholder engagement. Given that the Coal Policy was developed in ...

Pine Tree — The Community Speaks Through Action & Service

Author: Kip Kruger
On Saturday October 31, over 40 local residents, supporters, and community members gathered on a crisp Arkansas morning at the Pine Tree Research Station headquarters to help pick up trash and show support for keeping the property open to the public.  As the sun gained distance from the horizon, individuals and families started streaming in, and very quickly stories were being shared along with pictures from cell phones, passed back and forth. It became evident very quickly to this outsider ...

Historian, conservationist and writer Betsy Gaines Quammen

Betsy Gaines Quammen is the author of the new book American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God & Public Lands in the West, which explores the intersection of religious belief and landscape. Quammen never set out to write about the Bundys, or Mormonism. But her interviews with Bundy family members and her exhaustive study of the history of the Latter Day Saints revealed a side of the anti-public lands movement that no other writer or scholar has even approached. American Zion is an essential resource for ...

Coal Mining in Alberta

On a May long weekend in 2020, the Alberta government rescinded their Coal Policy with no announcement and no public consultation. This effectively places huge, formerly-protected swathes of the Alberta Rocky Mountains at risk of exploration and development, potentially displacing hundreds of livelihoods that depend on the pristine wilderness that was placed under protection by the Lougheed Conservative government. Exploration of coal leases have already started, and proposals are currently ...

The Legislative Finance Committee Evaluates NMDGF

Author: Joel Gay
NOTE: The original post contained an error about EPLUS harvest reporting requirements. It has been corrected here. A new report by the powerful Legislative Finance Committee says New Mexico elk hunters have been short-changed by the Department of Game and Fish over the years, through the controversial E-PLUS program that gives a substantial portion of licenses to landowners. The report, released Oct. 28, encourages the State Game Commission to revise E-PLUS to expand its benefits to ...
