Letters: Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act cuts through partisan politics

Author: Riley Egan
It’s easy to see why so many are fed up with modern politics and the “us versus them” rhetoric. Thankfully, a trip up the Blackfoot Valley puts this chaotic world into perspective with stunning mountains, clean waters, expansive ranchlands and people who still wave as you pass by. The Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act is common-sense policy and represents what Montana politics can get right: collaboration, broad support and a mentality of ‘we.’ Read more from the Missoula Current here...

The Island Within by Richard Nelson

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   I first read Richard Nelson’s The Island Within 20 years ago. The book is an intimate testament to a person’s sense of place, revealing the spiritual awareness imbued in all things. His paean to the island also blurs the genres of non-fiction and poetry that inspire awe and reverence for all life. The place is never named, but his words take you there nevertheless. This book immediately rewired ...

South Crazy Mountains land exchange OK’d

Author: Montana BHA
It’s a small step that took years of work, but the south end of the Crazy Mountains will have two fewer sections of private land inholdings, allowing easier access to public lands. Under a final decision announced by the Custer Gallatin National Forest on Monday, two land trades valued at more than $1.7 million have been approved for 1,900 acres. “I am excited to bring this piece of the South Crazy Project to a decision,” said Kathy Minor, acting forest supervisor, in a press ...

Minnesota Judge Upholds Public Land Acquisitions

The Minnesota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters applauds a decision this week by District Judge Thomas Van Hon, which affirms the private property rights of land owners to sell their land as they see fit and the Minnesota Department of the Natural Resources’ rightful authority to purchase new public lands in the state.  Starting in 2019, the Minnesota Chapter of BHA worked hard to show the Lac Qui Parle County Commissioners broad support for the purchase of 80 acres of public lands adjacent to ...

Kentucky Chapter Works to Find Common Conservation Ground

BY COLONEL MIKE ABELL   Safari Club International and BHA have not always seen eye to eye on every conservation issue. Still, we have worked to find common ground, and Kentucky BHA and Kentuckiana SCI have found shared purpose in what we have in common versus what we disagree upon. The partnership started with an appeal for help. In the spring of 2020, KYBHA reached out to all the conservation organizations in the state. We planned to undertake a tremendous task, and we needed help. Our ...

New York BHA Chapter Update - Spring 2021

Author: New York BHA
From the Chair I hope this newsletter finds everyone ready to hit the turkey woods Saturday morning, or to just get out and enjoy the outdoors whatever your pleasure. This past Sunday I was out enjoying a fine spring morning walk with my wife and two dogs on our property. We heard grouse drumming, geese a honking, cows lowin’, bees working, birds singing, and the ever familiar clippity-clop of the horses pulling the Amish buggies to worship service. I just couldn’t help to notice how in sync ...

Hunter, forager, and wild food educator Jenna Rozelle

“It started with food, and it’s evolved into what most hunters have experienced…sure, the end goal is food, but there’s a million more things to enjoy about it.” Jenna Rozelle lives in southern Maine, where she teaches classes on wild foods, forages, hunts, fishes and chronicles an existence spent close to the land. For her, hunting and fishing go hand in hand with foraging and land stewardship. A board member of the New England chapter of BHA and self described late-onset hunter, Rozelle ...
