June '22 Montana Elk Update

Author: Montana BHA
We've been busy shooting our bows, hitting the rifle range, doing some preseason scouting and watching our freezers empty one package of elk steaks at a time. Elk are on the mind, and we're not the only ones. There's a lot going on with elk management in Montana right now. Below is a quick rundown. 1) Elk hunting and all wildlife management in Montana is under attack. Earlier this month, Montana BHA and other in-state hunting and access groups formally filed to intervene to oppose the ...

Author: David Lien
The Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) chapter held their 13th Annual Rendezvous in the San Isabel National Forest west of Salida/Poncha Springs during June. A group of 20-to-30 hunters and anglers from around the state set up camp in a high-mountain meadow (known locally as the “goat wadi”) covering about six acres at 10,000 feet in the Sawatch Range. Native Trout on Public Lands and Waters

Author: Daniel Ritz

BY DANIEL RITZ   In February 2020, I met BHA’s chapter leaders and regional staff at the chapter's annual meeting near my home in Boise, Idaho. That was the first time I met Ace Hess, the Idaho and Nevada BHA chapter coordinator. Shortly after meeting Hess, he asked about my current projects and interests. At that time, my pursuit of the Western Native Trout Challenge was still a lofty pipedream driven largely by my own angling inexperience, curiosity and dissatisfaction at my ...

Can prison-farmed pheasants save hunting?

Author: Montana BHA
A spring day in the Bitterroot Valley’s Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge brings a cacophony of birdsong. The bugling of sandhill cranes, the familiar honking of Canadian geese, and the throaty rattles of red-winged blackbirds all come easily to discerning ears. But one voice seems to rise above the rest.  The raspy kaw of the male pheasant, or rooster, tends to betray the bird before its presence is obvious to the human eye. The pheasant itself is often concealed by tall grass as its ...

A Toast to Fallen Comrades

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Words by Backcountry Hunters & Anglers AFI Coordinator Trevor Hubbs   If you think this speech is difficult to listen to, I promise it is even tougher to deliver. The first time I gave this speech was at the battalion ball in 2008. At the time I thought I had been selected because I was an ambitious young soldier and being given a speaking assignment at the battalion ball in front of the command staff and assorted leaders was a reward of sorts. I now know that it is common to have the ...

6/3/22 NMDGF Game Commission Recap

EAGLE NEST, NM —The June 3 State Game Commission meeting dove into proposed big game rule changes on exotic species, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope and javelina. Barbary Sheep Rules: No Single Draw First up were exotics. The original proposed changes would lump draw hunt areas for barbary sheep into a single draw. However, significant pushback from the public led to an alternative proposal that would maintain two draw areas consisting of units 29/30 and units 32/36/37. While the eastern ...
