PA BHA: Game Commission should oversee deer shooting operations

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers joins the National Deer Association in calling for the regulatory oversight of the 723 captive deer shooting facilities to be transferred to the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC). The presence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in the Pennsylvania’s deer herd is a threat to the future of hunting in Pennsylvania and the $1.6 billion in economic output generated by hunting that supports many jobs and businesses. CWD was first found in ...

Support the Role of Hunters in Conservation Funding: Stop the RETURN Act

For 85 years, hunters have played a central role in wildlife conservation funding through the Pittman-Robertson Act.  During this time we have seen enormous success in restoring species including waterfowl, turkey, white-tailed deer and elk. Hunters, who willingly step up to conserve wildlife, remain proud of our contribution to conservation through the excise taxes on firearms, ammunition and archery equipment, to the tune of $1.1 billion in 2021.  The RETURN Act (H.R. 8167), legislation ...

Montana BHA responds to 'pick your weapon/season' proposal

Author: Montana BHA
FWP's elk advisory group deserves our thanks for their sincere, well-intended efforts to improve elk management in Montana. On July 7th, members forwarded a recommendation to 'pick your season/weapon.’ While we agree with the intent of this proposal (reducing hunting pressure on public lands), and we acknowledge that this is likely inevitable if Montana continues to grow in population and access to inaccessible elk isn't improved (and hunters fail to show up when it matters), we don't think ...

OPINION: Montanans expect more from FWP

Author: Doug Krings
With the former bureau chief of licensing and his 17 years’ experience now leading Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, we're left surprised and disappointed in how FWP's drawings and regulations have been administered lately. First, turkeys were being killed a week before the spring season and wardens were turning a blind eye because there was a typo on FWP’s official website that suggested the 2022 season opened a week before it did. Law-abiding turkey hunters were penalized with lost ...
