OPINION: Protect Habitat Montana funds

The secret is out. Everyone wants a piece of Montana. As property values skyrocket and taxes become increasingly burdensome, Montana’s landowners deserve every tool in the toolbox to protect their land, and it’s in our best interest to make sure they have a suite of options available to them to fend off development. Conservation easements are a great tool for this. They offer habitat protections while also giving private landowners a significant financial benefit, oftentimes allowing ...

More good news on wildlife crossings in California

Author: Anonym
The Brightline West high speed rail project plans to connect Los Angeles to Las Vegas along Interstate 15 and would have created a massive barrier to movement for desert bighorn sheep, mule deer, desert tortoise, desert kit fox and many more species. An unlikely coalition that BHA joined was able to successfully advocate for three wildlife crossings to be included in the project. We don’t all see eye to eye on many issues but it’s always refreshing to see groups put aside their differences ...

Self Worth

Author: Trevor Hubbs
"Self Worth" “What's my worth to BHA and the Armed Forces Initiative?“ This is an honest question that was asked of me by a volunteer in Minneapolis. An Air Force veteran who was responsible for setting up our 2022 Boundary Waters canoe trip for 18 veterans. As a thank you for his hours of volunteer time setting this event up, the AFI board offered to send him and his spouse to the BHA annual fundraiser in Missoula under the condition that he also volunteer to work the apparel sales ...

Sportsmen Decry Bill Removing Marijuana Tax From Habitat Funding

Author: Montana BHA
Conservationists are amassing to oppose a Legislative bill that would go against voters’ wishes and permanently cut marijuana tax money out of Montana’s popular habitat acquisition program. On Thursday, the Montana House Appropriations committee will hear House Bill 462, which changes previous legislation mandating how marijuana tax money is distributed. Most important to hunters and conservationists, the bill eliminates the tax money allocated annually to the Habitat Montana program. In ...

Protecting Our Sporting Heritage

Author: Montana BHA
Hunters are fired up in Montana right now. We’ve seen bull elk tags being given to large absentee landowners, an inability to address the crowding issues on the Madison River, hunting regulations that favor guides and outfitters over Montana's houndsmen, releasing pen-raised pheasants in Montana, and more. In these quick videos, Ryan Callaghan reminds Montana sportsmen and women who holds the authority on these things, and what we can - and need to - do about it. Join Montana BHA in our ...

Forging New Paths: Building Community, Broadening Conservation and Celebrating Wild Food

Author: Trey Curtiss
Written by Trey Curtiss and Kylie Schumacher BHA has often touted that the “backcountry” portion of our organization's name is not only synonymous with wilderness; rather, the backcountry is a state of mind. Whether your backcountry is a secluded portion of the Bob Marshall Wilderness complex in Montana, or a woodlot sectioned off by busy roadways outside Atlanta, BHA defines backcountry by simple guidelines: a place to find solace and derive a deeper connection to the natural world. As a ...

AZ BHA Monitors Bill Aimed at Feral Horse Protections

Author: Jason Ceola
Bad legislation considered last year has reared its head again with the introduction of SB 1057. If passed, this legislation would give feral horses currently ravaging the Apache National Forest the same legal protection as the Salt River Herd received in 2016 through A.R.S. s 3-1491. This was a bad idea in 2016, and it's a bad idea today.  With this protection, feral horses essentially become the legislatively preferred species on its landscape to the detriment of native wildlife and ...
