HB 462 pits Montana’s outdoors against mental health in a false narrative

Author: Montana BHA
What comes to mind when you think of Montana? A vast sky where sun and clouds eternally play the game of hide and seek, with shadows dancing across undulating prairies interspersed with the open space of working ranches? Or ribbed, muscular mountains rising toward heaven, flanked with bottle-green trees, u-shaped valleys carved by glaciers with rivers running clear? Maybe a place teeming with biodiversity and wildlife still freely roaming, and hard-working people fighting to keep all the ...

Another Dam in the Arkansas River? In Tulsa? Why?

The Oklahoma chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has joined several other local conservation organizations to raise concern at a proposition brought forth by the City of Tulsa to add an additional dam to the Arkansas river.  We’ve asked both the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the US Army Corp of Engineers to carefully review this proposition and consider joining us in requesting an environmental impact study.   The letter below was submitted by Josh Johnston, a ...

What is the AFI

Author: Trevor Hubbs
I got a email recently from a BHA member and a veteran in the south.  I thought this could be a good opportunity to answer it for the larger BHA community so everyone can benefit from this great question.   Question: I guess I’m just confused on what AFI does. Why does it seem to be set up as a different organization?    Is this going to be the business model of BHA moving forward to attract different segments of society? Thanks.    Answer:   Excellent question, thank you for reaching ...

Public skeptical about Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ new strategy for Fish Creek

Author: Montana BHA
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is close to publishing a draft document for the Fish Creek State Park and Wildlife Management Area. But don’t call it a management plan — it’s a “recreation strategy.” On Tuesday night at FWP Region 2 headquarters, more than 60 people listened to FWP Region 2 supervisor Randy Arnold and University of Montana facilitator Charles Besancon provide an outline of the recreation strategy for the 45,000-acre Fish Creek complex near Alberton Gorge, a draft of ...

Wildlife Loses Unless We Solve Conflict Between Landowners & Hunters

Author: Sabrina King
This letter to the editor was originally published in Cowboy State Daily on Feb. 27, 2023. Dear Editor: Last hunting season, a story ran in the Cowboy State Daily of a bull elk wasting away on private land because the landowner would not let the hunter who shot this elk onto his land to harvest. Not trusting the hunter, the private landowner refused entry – as was his right – and the hunter was told to “save his tag” for another bull. Like many who read the story, I was both heartbroken and ...
