Northwest Colorado Fence Pulling & Greater Sage Grouse Leks Viewing

Project Description Over the weekend of April 22 & 23, Colorado's Habitat Stewardship Coordinator, CPW Biologist Brian Holmes, and BHA volunteers ripped out one mile of fence that was impacting wildlife movement and overlapping with high priority elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and greater sage grouse habitat. This winter was a particularly difficult winter for elk, deer, and pronghorn in the Northwest. With snow in low elevation wintering habitat at above average depths many animals starved to ...

Western Hunting for Texans

Author: Kyle Mobley
The best resources for Texans wanting to get into western hunting: Subscriptions   My first memory with subscriptions for hunting was at Bill’s Barbershop in Archer City, Texas. Part of Bill’s barbershop experience was combing through all the hunting magazines he subscribed to and seeing pictures and articles about heading into the backcountry on horseback after big muleys, igniting the desire to head out west.   The third installment of this article series on helping Texans with western ...

BHA Shuts Down a Petition Attempting to Close Nearshore Fishing in California

Fish & Game Commission voted unanimously to reject a petition that would have closed over 250 miles of nearshore fishing access in California's Central Coast. A petition before the Fish & Game Commission of California proposed to "prohibit take of groundfish shoreward of 100 feet in the West Coast Central Groundfish Management Area year-round." The petitioner cited struggling kelp forests as rationale for the broad fishing closure of nearly 250 miles of California's central coast for iconic ...

Backcountry Bluegills

By John Provenzale It's not every day that you find a public land gem. But today I did. It is even less often that you find a place that exceeds expectations. But today was a perfect day. After a long hike of 1.5 miles with 5 youngsters aged 2-8, we finally made it to the small lake of only 50 acres. I had high hopes that this distance from the road would keep the fishing pressure down. It did. The kids reeled in bluegills and sunfish one after the other for two hours. My fingers were worn ...

The future of public access to public lands is being decided in Wyoming with the ongoing saga of the corner-crossing hunters and their legal travails. Gov's Amendments Triple Elk Licenses Given to Nonresident Landowners

Author: Montana BHA
Instead of signing a bill that would give elk licenses to nonresidents who own lots of land, the Governor’s Office returned it to the Legislature with amendments. But that hasn’t improved the schism among resident hunters. On Friday, after a week of consideration, Gov. Greg Gianforte sent House Bill 635 back to the Legislature with two amendments that have further disappointed some hunters. As originally passed, HB 635, sponsored by Rep. Joshua Kassmier, R-Fort Benton, would set aside up to ...
