Author: Louis Bahin
Over the weekend of May 13, 2023, more than 20 volunteers gathered with folks from Tangle Free Montana and staff from the City of Missoula on the recently acquired Bluebird Preserve, a 124-acre parcel in Missoula's North Hills area. These lands connect to 304 acres of Republic Services conservation easement and provide critical wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities, and protections for a rare species of wildflower, Missoula Phlox (Phlox missoulensis). However, unnecessary barbed wire ...

There’s nothing quite like enjoying a refreshing bowl of Red Snapper Ceviche on a hot summer day in Texas. With its bright and zesty flavors, it's the perfect dish to cool you down and satisfy your hunger. The key to making a delicious ceviche is to use the freshest ingredients possible. 1 lb fresh Red Snapper filets (about two medium-sized filets or one large filet) 1-1/2 cups lime juice (about 10-12 small limes) 1/2 large red onion, finely chopped 2 serrano peppers, minced 2 medium ...

Kansas Chapter Chair heads to D.C. to speak up for LWCF

Author: Kansas BHA
By Kurt Ratzlaff Kansas BHA Chapter Chair The words “What the heck am I doing here?” rattled around in my mind several times during the 48 hours I recently spent in Washington DC. But there I was, walking the ‘halls of Congress’, no less. To say I’d never done that before would be the understatement of a lifetime! The Land and Water Conservation Fund Coalition had contacted the Kansas Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (and a few other chapters) to see if any Board members could go ...

Senate Committee Takes Action on Recreation, Conservation

A May 17th business meeting held by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee was a highly anticipated opportunity to advance multiple conservation and recreation policy priorities supported by Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. It marked the first time any of these bills had received a review in the 118th Congress.   Typically, a business meeting – where legislation is amended or marked up, and then voted on by committee members – is preceded by a legislative hearing. However, the ...

FWP accidentally issues too many moose, bighorn sheep licenses; recall ordered

Author: Montana BHA
Four Montana moose hunters and 60 bighorn sheep tag applicants are in for some very bad news. Fish, Wildlife & Parks over-allocated these highly prized tags in seven different hunting districts in its recent drawing. Realizing the mistake, the agency is issuing a recall. Operator error inputting incorrect quotas was to blame, said Greg Lemon, FWP spokesman. Although the data is double-checked, the errors weren’t caught. The bureau’s staff realized the error on May 16 and put a block on ...

North Carolina AFI Turkey Camp

I recently had the pleasure in attending the 2023 North Carolina Armed Forces Initiative Turkey Camp as a mentor.  There was a bit of trepidation on my part about being a mentor as I do not have a lot of experience hunting turkeys.  It was not something my family did growing up in Pennsylvania.  We were the standard white-tailed deer and small game hunters.  All told I have a total of four seasons worth of turkey hunting experience.    Adding to my trepidation is the fact that I have yet to ...

Return of the Buffalo

More than 30 million bison once roamed North America. Only about 50,000 now live in wild herds, leading ecologists to say the buffalo is “functionally extinct.” Will the nation’s mammal and a symbol of the West endure?   This story originally appeared in the Summer 2021 issue of Backcountry Journal. By Christine Peterson   Ervin Carlson was in his 20s when he saw a bison. The creatures were being brought back to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in northern Montana, a place they’d lived for ...
