BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 156: Florida Backcountry Lawman Bob Lee

You may remember Bob Lee from Free the Ocklawaha River!, where he and Hal first met. Bob is one of the leading voices for the removal of Rodman Dam and the reconnection of the Ocklawaha River to the St. Johns and the Atlantic Ocean. He knows of what he speaks: Bob Lee was the game warden for this part of the American backcountry – the oldest of Old Florida – for over 30 years. He wrote about his adventures in his excellent first book Backcountry Lawman and expanded on that success by ...

EVENT RECAP: 2nd Annual Logan Shooting Area Clean Up

You know what’s harder than getting volunteers out on a rainy day? Getting volunteers out on the first warm, sunny day of spring. But even with what felt like the first warm day since October, we had nearly 30 volunteers join Montana BHA on April 29, 2023 as we cleaned up the unauthorized shooting area near Logan again this year. This is the second consecutive year that we’ve been out there, and upon initial inspection, the area didn’t look nearly as rough as last year. We found out that ...

In a quiet computer lab in Stone Hall on the University of Montana campus, Nicole Bealer and three other members of UM’s Backcountry Hunters & Anglers student chapter gathered around a single monitor to watch the House Wildlife Committee hear a bill that targets nonresident college students who hunt. Bealer is the current president of UM BHA and is graduating from the wildlife biology program next month. “This year has been my victory lap as president,” said Bealer. This past month, she ...

Ohio BHA Summer Policy Update

OH BHA Chapter Leader Tony Ruffing heads to D.C.   While we're looking forward to our big summer party, Muster in the Marsh, we're also keeping a close eye on developments in Columbus. Our legislature has been busy with mixed results, and we've been keeping a close eye in particular on the budgeting process as embodied in state house bill 33. It's been an interesting, frustrating process to watch, and Ohio BHA members have provided important feedback both through BHA action alerts, and via ...

Nevada Legislative Update - May 2023

Hunters and wildlife conservationists scored two major wins in May by killing two bills which would have had significant negative impacts on the state’s hunting traditions and wildlife habitat. The Nevada chapter of BHA was actively engaged in both these efforts, along with a collection of other hunting and conservation interests. Here's more on both bills: SB 90 – Hundreds of Nevada hunters and anglers joined BHA in taking action on this bill, which would have jeopardized ongoing efforts ...
