Montana AFI is hosting a Advocacy in the Elk Woods Dual Skills camp in the Saphire Mountains September 15th through the 19th.
Join your fellow Montana veterans and active duty military community in learning how to be a public lands advocate and how elk are managed in Montana.
Spend Evenings with a FWP Biologist and Public lands mentors learning:
Elk Biology from MT FWP
-What are elk
-where do elk live and why
-Elk annual migration cycle
North Amercian Model of Wildlife Conservation
-Why elk are managed differently in MT
-Why hunt Elk in September
Public lands access:
- History of Public Lands
- Why public lands exsist in MT
- What agencies manage public land
Spend days in the elk woods with a mentor learing field skills to be a better Elk hunter
-Elk callng basics
- Reading Terrain Features
-Understanding Elk Sign
- Identifying Habitat
This is an opportunity to learn and increase valuable skills and build camaraderie within Montana AFI. MT AFI wiill provide tents, water, food, coffee, and and some loaner gear. To attend, you will need to be a current member of BHA AFI and have your own:
-basic archery/hunting equipment,
-clothes and boots suited for mountain walking 5+ miles daily,
-a pack able to carry daily gear,
- a sleeping system for 30 degree weather.
*If you dont have some of the above gear please still apply and let MT AFI leader Scott Carroll [email protected] know what gear you are missing so we can make sure we have loaner gear for you*
Licenses and Permits Needed:
Montana Basic hunting license: $10
Conservation license: $8
General Elk license: $20
Bow hunting license: $10
*Note you must have completed hunter education to purchase the licenses*
