event_description: POSTPONED DUE TO BEAR SEASONNEW DATE TBDPublic Lands Month Cleanup Event!!Join the Michigan Chapter of BHA on September 9th from 9am - 2pm for some great public land stewardship! Work alongside chapter leaders and United States Forest Service personnel to remove old unused fencing left on public lands! Old fencing can create major barriers and obstacles for wildlife on these properties. Plus, it can also be a danger to folks frequenting public lands as much of these fences are hard to see while navigating through the densely grown areas. September is public lands month what a great way to celebrate our public lands, meet some great folks, and make an impact! Many of our chapter leaders will be camping the night before and right after the event, so join them at their campfire for great conversation, food, and stories! More information below for the event and camping! Please RSVP below so that we have adequate supplies for the day and can prepare for your attendance.  Please note*** This event requires walking over uneven ground, in wooded areas, and physical labor that may require lifting of 25 lbs. or more. Furthermore, this fencing is old barbwire, so gloves are HIGHLY recommended.  Below is a list of what the USFS requires for this kind of worksite, and all BHA volunteers need to comply:Closed toe and heel footwear (boots recommended)Hard hats and safety glassesThere is a required release form that will have to be signed in order to helpWe also recommend the following:Insect repellent – mosquitoes, ticks, and other pests are prevalent in this area. Pretreat with Permathrin, and/or spray down with DEET or Picaridin. Thermacell is not a bad idea either.Sunscreen and personal shade – we will be in and out of sun, so cover up as needed by your skin type/needs.Long sleeves and long pants, made of cool, breathable material. Nothing too baggy, or that could become caught/snagged on the fencing and underbrush.FOOD and WATER – we take frequent water breaks so please bring water to stay hydrated – again, we are in the woods, away from vehicles, so bringing water is important. Snacks and a decent lunch are recommended – we take a break for lunch, and you can always munch on a quick snack during water breaks or while moving around. Again, we will be away from our vehicles – if you want it, bring it.Backpack – you are expected to carry what you need/want to bring with you, AND carry everything out with you that you brought in.I also recommend bringing biodegradable toilet paper (for obvious reasons: we are not near any bathroom facilities)There will be backwoods camping the Friday night before and after the event Saturday night. Here are the coordinates to the parking spot, from there you will see signs directing you back the 40-75 yards to our campsite. Again, this is in an area where ticks, mosquitoes and other vermin reside – I HIGHLY recommend pre-treating your clothes gear, and/or spraying down for insects with either DEET or Picaridin: if you can, I’d recommend pretreating with Permathrin. Camping parking is located at 44.54619 N, -83.90034 W This will be a fantastic event and we cant wait to see you there!
