Join Arizona AFI, the Watershed Management Group, and the River Run Network for a citizen science beaver population survey along the San Pedro River in southern Arizona — one of the last free-flowing rivers in the Southwest and one of the most ecologically significant riparian corridors in the region.
Beavers were once extirpated from southern Arizona before successful reintroductions to the San Pedro River beginning in 1999 and 2000. These keystone species are essential to flood control, habitat creation, and overall riparian ecosystem health. By participating in this annual survey, you’ll help collect real data that supports ongoing habitat restoration and species management — and spend a full day in one of Arizona’s most iconic landscapes doing it.
Active-duty service members can earn volunteer hours for performance reviews, awards, or professional recognition.
Before the event, all participants must complete a volunteer registration form with the Watershed Management Group at watershedmg.org/events/2026-annual-san-pedro-river-bi-national-beaver-survey-day-1. When registering, select that you’d like to volunteer with BHA/AFI and indicate your preferred hiking distance.
