Join the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers' Armed Forces Initiative for an immersive Black Bear Hunting Camp in Clallam County, Washington — a multi-day mentored experience in the heart of Olympic National Forest designed for active-duty service members and military veterans.

This camp pairs participants with experienced mentors for a hands-on introduction to ethical, effective black bear hunting. Beyond time in the field, attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of wildlife management, public lands stewardship, and the conservation principles that sustain hunting heritage for future generations. Whether you're pursuing your first black bear or looking to deepen your knowledge of conservation and public lands, this camp delivers an outstanding experience alongside a tight-knit community of hunters.

Space is extremely limited — only 5 mentor and 5 mentee spots are available. Applications close August 28, 2026. Don't wait to apply.

What You'll Learn

  • How to identify bear sign and select productive hunting locations

  • The importance of public access and the legislative process that protects our hunting heritage

Camp Schedule

Participants are expected to attend the full event to ensure continuity with their mentor or mentee and to receive the complete educational experience.

  • Thursday, September 24: Arrive by 2:00 PM — camp setup, introductions, and evening orientation
  • Friday, September 25: Full day of scouting and hunting alongside mentors
  • Saturday, September 26: Full day of scouting and hunting alongside mentors
  • Sunday, September 27: Morning hunt; camp concludes at 12:00 PM

How to Register

RSVP through the BHA website. After registering, you will receive an application link in your confirmation email. Your application must be submitted by August 28, 2026. Selected participants will be notified during the first week of September and will receive additional information on camp logistics, required gear, licenses, and other event details.

The application will ask whether you are applying as a mentor or a mentee — please indicate your preference when you apply.

Mentors Welcome

You do not need to be a veteran or active-duty service member to serve as a mentor. Anyone with black bear hunting experience who wants to give back and help introduce others to the hunt is encouraged to apply as a mentor. Mentors play a critical role in making this camp possible and in building the next generation of hunters and conservationists.

Who Can Attend

Mentee spots are open to active-duty service members, military veterans, and their families. Mentor spots are open to anyone with black bear hunting experience regardless of military affiliation.

You do not need to be a BHA member to attend.
