Looking to make a big impact on Public lands, this Public Lands Day? Look no further because NM Habitat Stewardship Coordinator Elden Aguilar and Taos BLM Field office would like to invite you all out to RIO GRANDE DEL NORTE PUBLIC LANDS DAY! We will be partnering with Friends of the Rio Grande, NM Wildlife Federation, & National Wildlife Federation. This Final round for the season we will be heading to San Antonio Mountain for more Fence Removal and Modification. We have been chipping away at a 3 1/4 mile fence line that runs along Forest Service road 87. This area is a part of the Migration Corridor for Pronghorn Antelope, Elk, and Mule Deer. Modifying it with more wildlife friendly fencing called LAY DOWN FENCING, which is crucial especially during migration season.
What is “Lay down Fencing”? It is typically made up of 4 strand wire attached to wooden posts. (Each wire is set at the mandatory height with a smooth wire at the bottom for safe antelope crossing), wired at the base of ground-installed posts. It can be laid down over long distances while keeping the tension.
Sunday, we will be heading out to the Rio Grande River for some Fly Fishing led by Ben Mortensen (Friends of the Rio Grande). Extra fly rods will be available to borrow if you need one. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, Experience isn’t necessary. If it’s your first time we got you! So come on out for some Stewardship work & fly fishing on the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument!
SCHEDULE
Friday August 21- Arrive anytime in the afternoon at camp. You will be responsible for your own dinner.
Saturday August 22 – 8:00 a.m. meeting to discuss safety and the workday. Lunch will be provided by Fence lines BBQ.
Saturday Evening – Wild Game Potluck around the fire. Wild game not necessary but please bring a dish.
Sunday August 23 – Day of fly fishing on the Rio Grande River
WHAT TO BRING
Bottle of water, long sleeve shirt, pants, boots, sunglasses, gloves, & wire cutters. (BHA will Provide other fencing tools/supplies).
CAMPING LOCATION: (36.85093, -106.08096)
We will be Camping near San Antonio Mountain, North of Tres Piedras in the Carson National Forest. Take highway 285 north, from Tres Piedras for 11 miles. Turn Left (west) on Forest Service Road 87. Follow the dirt road for 7.3 miles, where you will see a group of pine trees on your left (Southside of the road) there will be a BHA Sign.
WORK LOCATION: (36.8176, -106.03755)
For those who plan on coming Saturday morning, we will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the cattle guard. Take forest service road 87 for 3.5 miles, west of highway 285.
FISHING LOCATION: Rio Grande River (exact location TBD)
