EVENT DETAILS

September Archery Elk & Deer season is right around the corner on the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument. What an exciting time for archery hunters this is! Join Habitat Stewardship Coordinator Elden Aguilar and Taos BLM Field office as we go back to San Antonio Mountain for another round of Fence Removal and Modification. We will be working the same fence line along Forest Service road 87. So far we have knocked out about a half mile of “Lay-down Fencing”. We’ll be removing another 1/4 mile of non wildlife friendly fencing and modifying it with more of this unique fencing.

What is “Lay down Fencing”? It is made up of 4 strand wire attached to wooden posts. (Each wire is set at the mandatory height with a smooth wire at the bottom for safe antelope crossing), wired at the base of ground-installed posts. It can be laid down over long distances while keeping the tension. This special Modification is effective especially when livestock aren’t being contained in a high traffic area where wildlife are moving during migration season.

After all of the hard work is done. Sunday, we will be having an archery shoot for volunteers who plan on camping with us after the event, BYOB! (BRING YOUR OWN BOW). NO Competition, just fling some arrows, & brush up on those shots before the season starts on public lands.

Come out and gain good hunting karma and inspiration on your public lands! Volunteers will be entered to win a $250 gift card to Sitka.
