Shirley Mountain Fence Removal - Rawlins, WY

Join Backcountry Hunters & Anglers for a hands-on stewardship project in the Shirley Mountains near Rawlins, Wyoming, in partnership with the BLM Rawlins Field Office. Volunteers will spend the day removing around 1 mile of obsolete fencing to improve habitat connectivity for the Platte Valley Mule Deer Herd, a migratory population that relies on this landscape as part of its seasonal range.

The project area sits within important habitat for the Platte Valley Mule Deer Herd and lies near Miracle Mile on the North Platte River, one of Wyoming’s most well-known Blue Ribbon trout fisheries. By improving habitat connectivity in this region, volunteers will help support both healthy wildlife populations and the broader public lands landscape that sportsmen and women value.

Camping

Camp Location: Pryor Flats Campground
Camping is available at Pryor Flats Campground. The standard camping fee will be waived for volunteers courtesy of the BLM.

Volunteers are welcome to arrive the evening before the project and camp with the group.

Event Schedule

Friday, August 14th - Optional Arrival
Volunteers are welcome to arrive Friday afternoon or evening and camp at Pryor Flats Campground.

Saturday, August 15th - Primary Work Day
8:30 AM — Meet at camp for coffee and safety briefing
9:00 AM — Fence removal begins
12:00 PM — Lunch in the field
3:30–4:00 PM — Wrap up and return to camp

Sunday, August 16th - Optional Stewardship Work
Volunteers are welcome to join Sunday morning as we continue fence removal in the project area.

What to Bring

• Sturdy boots suitable for uneven terrain

• Long pants and durable work clothes

• Work gloves

• Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)

• Layers for changing weather

BHA will provide: tools, water and Gatorade throughout the project, plus a light breakfast and boxed lunch for the Saturday work day.
