Join us for the Sargent KV Trick Tank Rehab project!
We’re heading back to the Sargent KV Trick Tank site, where BHA volunteers rebuilt the exclosure fencing a couple of years ago – this time to kick off the next phase of habitat improvements. Our team will join USFS staff on the ground to transport new materials to the tank site and begin removing the old piping, trough, apron, and deconstructing the existing tank. These first steps will set the stage for meaningful upgrades that improve water availability for elk, deer, and other wildlife.
We will meet on Saturday at 8:00 AM at the USFS Ranger Station in Magdalena (203 1st Street, Magdalena, NM 87825). After a safety and task briefing, we will drive / carpool to the work site for a full day of field work. The drive from the Ranger Station to the project area takes approximately one hour. Volunteers should be prepared for a short, uphill hike to the tank site and for moderate physical labor. Please review the list of recommended items to bring below and come ready for variable weather conditions, including the possibility of rain, wind, or strong sun. This event is kid friendly.
Weekend Schedule & Additional Details Friday, 3/20: Arrive at camp (dinner on your own) and socialize Saturday, 3/21: Workday; wild game potluck and campfire conversation at night Sunday, 3/22: Optional workday Campsite: We will camp in the group site at the Water Canyon Campground. The campground can accommodate camper trailers, however there are not any hook-ups. Vault toilets are available at the campground.
What to bring: Leather work gloves and eye protection (sunglasses work) are a must. Volunteers should be ready for moderate hiking and labor, and should wear appropriate work clothing (long sleeves and pants that you don’t mind if they get dirty). Other items to bring include sun protection, leather boots, and bug spray. Please also be sure to bring food for lunches, breakfast, snacks, plenty of water, first aid, required medications and communication devices. USFS will provide some tools for the removal of the old piping, trough, etc. but it would be helpful to bring shovels, reciprocating saws, and/or hand saws if you don’t mind using your personal tools on this project.
