This stewardship opportunity will take place on Wild Horse Island, where volunteers will assist Montana State Parks in maintaining the bunchgrass ecosystem by thinning 2–3-inch diameter ponderosa pine trees near Eagle Cove Landing.

Volunteers are to meet at 9:30 am at the parking lot of the Big Arm Unit of Flathead Lake State Park. From there, volunteers will be transported by boat to Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake, which takes approximately 30 minutes. The workday will consist of two hours of work, followed by a lunch break (provided by Montana BHA), and then a couple more hours of work. We will conclude the day with a hike into the interior of the island, across to the homestead, and back down to Skeeko Bay, where the boats will pick us up for the return voyage back to Big Arm.

A Montana State Parks crew will be on-site to guide the project. Please bring anything you need for a day of work, such as appropriate PPE, water, and tools for removing brush and small trees (gloves, eye protection, hand saw, loppers, and weather-appropriate clothing). There may not be access back to your cars until the end of the day, so plan accordingly. Pets are NOT allowed in the state park.
