Spring in NM brings wind, turkey hunting and elk movements back to the high country. Join NM BHA, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator Bard Edrington V and biologists from the Rio Puerco BLM field office on April 17-19 as we remove 2.5 miles of fencing, improving habitat connectivity for big game species.
The purpose of this project is to replace an existing 2.5-mile fence within a critical riparian wildlife exclosure area, that is important for big game movement including elk and mule deer. This area serves as a vital wildlife corridor that funnels wildlife helping to prevent collisions with vehicles on a major highway US-550. The replacement of the fence with wildlife- friendly materials will enhance habitat connectivity, support wildlife migration, and protect sensitive riparian ecosystems. Additionally, this area is excluded from livestock grazing, further emphasizing the need for a fence that supports wildlife conservation.

Turkey Hunt
Spring turkey season opens April 15, so we figured what better way to round out a Saturday of fence pulling than chasing spring gobbles on Sunday. You will be responsible for your own turkey hunting gear and license. New turkey hunters are welcome to join, we will have mentors available to take out new hunters.

Location
The worksite is located ~11 miles south of Cuba, NM off highway 550.
If coming from Albuquerque, take us highway 550 north from Bernalillo. After passing San Ysidro travel ~30 miles north to an unmarked dirt road on the east side, look for a “BHA Event” sign. Camp will be ~.8 miles up this road. The camp is a dispersed camping area with no amenities.
Schedule
Friday April 17- Arrive anytime in the afternoon at camp. You will be responsible for your own dinner.
Saturday April 18- 8:00 am meeting to discuss safety and the work day. BHA will provide breakfast and lunch.
Saturday Evening: Turkey hunting and wild game potluck around the fire. Wild game is not necessary but please bring a dish to share.
Sunday April 19- Turkey hunting! We’ll kick but on Saturday removing fence and go chase gobblers on Sunday.
What to Bring
Long sleeve shirt, pants, boots, sunglasses, gloves and wire cutters (we will provide tools).
