Are you looking for meaningful and rewarding stewardship work? A way to get your hands dirty and improve migration connectivity for wildlife?

Join the Utah BHA chapter this year on May 8-10 as we improve migration corridors for the Paunsaugunt deer herd.  We will be removing the bottom barbed strand from 6 miles of fencing.  This is hard but impactful and rewarding work.

The Paunsaugunt deer herd spend their summers high on the plateaus in Bryce Canyon National Park.  When the snow hits, they move down in elevation to their summer range on the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.  Along their migration trek they encounter multiple fence barriers that must be navigated.  Barbed wire fencing bisects important winter habitats and can disrupt migration corridors.  The Wildlands Network has been working to inventory these fences and prioritize which sections need modification.  Modification entails removing the bottom barbed strand and replacing it with a smooth strand wire at 16” off the ground.  The next step is spacing the top three strands at 6”, 8”, and 12”.  This results in a fence that is 42” tall and a bottom strand that is 16” off the ground.  Much easier for a fawn to pass under and an adult to jump over without risking entanglement.

Location: The work site is located ~27 miles east of Kanab, UT.

From Kanab, UT, travel ~27 miles east on highway 89, turn north on Kitchen Coral Wash road.  Trave north for ~1/2 mile to the camping area on your right.  This is a dispersed camping area with no amenities.
