The Colorado BHA chapter Denver and Boulder Groups sponsored a “Backcountry on Ice” fishing event on March 6. A group of hardy anglers met for a carpool in Boulder Saturday morning before departing to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area trailhead near Ward, and then hiked 1.5 miles through an elevation gain of 1,000 ft to Brainard Lake.
Former Colorado BHA Board member Russell Bassett took lead in organizing the event and said (in part): “Ten BHA members participated, and there were several firsts, including first fish through the ice, first trout and first fish through the ice in Colorado. Most everyone at least had a bite and two of the guys caught half a dozen fish … everyone was happy to be getting up in the mountains.”“Russ it was an amazing trip especially with such challenging weather,” Colorado BHA co-chair Don Holmstrom added. “Great BHA and outdoor adventure conversations at the Ned restaurant post-trip. Big smiles all around … Professional-level experience from beginning to end. Huge thanks man!”
