Help Maintain Archery Mule Deer Hunting in the Sandia Mountains! For the past several years the New Mexico Chapter of BHA and New Mexico Department of Game & Fish Conservation Officers have worked together to educate trail users and the non-hunting public on archery hunts that take place in the Sandia Mountains in November and January. There has historically been a lack of education around the longstanding history of bowhunting in the Sandias and how important this hunt is to New Mexicans hoping to fill their freezers with free range wild game. This hunt provides an incredible opportunity and while being in close proximity to New Mexicos largest urban center is a plus for hunters but there is increased potential for conflicts with the non-hunting public.After making thousands of contacts during these outreach events since 2021 we know that hunters and other trail users can coexist on the landscape. Simply introducing ourselves and providing information on the nature and timing of hunts alleviates most concerns. We are seeking knowledgeable and friendly hunters to man several key trailheads in the ABQ foothills alongside NMDGF conservation officers from 8 am - 11 am on Saturday, November 18, 2023 during this years youth bowhunt. Volunteers and NMDGF Conservation Officers will work together to share information and answer questions for anyone interested in chatting with us! We plan on having refreshments to encourage engagement. Please join us for all or part of the day. Our efforts will be concentrated at the Pino/Elena Gallegos, Bear Canyon and Embudo trailheads in the Sandia foothills where a majority of the hunter/public interaction occurs. NM BHA Treasurer and event leader Lance Miller will reach out to you to coordinate shifts and trailhead assignments based on your availability.
