Sportsmen for the San Juan Mountains Wilderness

thumbnail.jpgThe Colorado Chapter of BHA is proud to announce the launching of the Sportsmen for the San Juan Mountains Wilderness Coalition. We have joined TU, Artemis, and a number of Colorado Business Leaders to build sportsmen and women support for the San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act.

The San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act (SJMWA) is a portion of the Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy (CORE) Act recently introduced by Colorado Senator Michael Bennet and Congressman Joe Neguse. It will add 60,000 acres of wilderness and special management designations to southwest Colorado permanently protecting habitat for trout, elk, mule deer, Rocky Mountain big horn sheep, Gunnison sage grouse, Canada lynx, and many more. The headwaters of the San Miguel, Uncompaghre, and Animas rivers will all be protected including 2.5 miles of Colorado River cutthroat trout waters. Naturita Canyon, which feeds the San Miguel, will also be protected from mineral leasing ensuring residents in the area have clean drinking water.

Sportsmen and women have a proud history of standing up for important issues, and there is no greater issue than protecting wildlife habitat, wild public lands, and expanding hunting and fishing opportunities.

We need your help to demonstrate strong support from the hunting and angling community to our Colorado Delegation. The landscapes included in this bill are some of the most deserving for Wilderness protections in the West because of the incredible wildlife, habitat, and recreational values they contain. Our freedom to hunt and fish depends on habitat. While many of us enjoy hunting and fishing on a range of landscapes, including farm fields and reservoirs, there is something special – even magical – about hunting deep in the backcountry or fishing on a remote river.

Wilderness hunting and fishing deliver a sense of freedom, challenge and solitude that is increasingly trampled by the twin pressures of growing population and increasing technology. Many treasured fish and wildlife species – such as cutthroat trout,  and bighorn sheep – thrive in wilderness. Others, like elk and mule deer, benefit from wilderness.
